Lawrenceville, NJ – With two outs in the top of the 11th inning, junior CF Joe Silvestrone singled in the game-winning run, as the Wagner baseball team extended its win streak to nine straight with a 4-3 road victory at Rider this afternoon.

The Seahawks improve to 21-10 on the season while the Broncs falter to 6-21. For the Green & White, this is the team's second win streak consisting of at least nine games, with the first occurring from March 10 through game one of the March 25 doubleheader against Bryant.

In addition to delivering the game-winner, Silvestrone was a combined 3-for-5 at the plate this afternoon, with a run scored and the game-winning RBI. Junior 3B Anthony Pecora and senior LF Anthony Godino added two hits in the contest.

Wagner's senior 1-2 hitters in Nick Mascelli and Sean Mazzio also drove in an RBI in the contest. Sophomore RHP Nick Robino earned his fifth victory of the season (5-1) while freshman right-hander, Nick LePre, earned his first collegiate save in pitching a scoreless bottom of the eleventh. Sophomore RHP Nick Zuppe earned his first collegiate start and did not allow a hit over his two innings of work while walking one and striking out a batter.

Rider's Joe Papeo (1-5) took the loss, working five innings in relief of teammates Jordan Silverman and Nick Payesko. Silverman started the contest, firing off three scoreless frames while allowing just two hits and recording three punchouts. The Broncs got four hits from leadoff hitter Joe Simone while Tyler Stockwell and Christian Estevez also added two hits in defeat. Simone and Jake Barbiere were credited with the RBIs for Rider in the game.

Rider got on the board first in this contest in the bottom of the third. Estevez led off the frame with single to third base and moved into scoring position after Barbiere grounded out to short. Simone singled back up the middle as Estevez came around to score.

The Seahawks tallied three runs in the top of the fifth in taking a two-run lead. Senior RF Kyle Cala led off the Wagner fifth with his third home run of the season, and second in as many games, as the ball sailed over the left field wall. Two straight base hits from freshman designated hitter Ben Montenegro and Silvestrone along with a  sacrifice bunt from Pecora gave the visitors runners in scoring position as Montenegro moved to third and Silvestrone to second. Mascelli lofted a pop fly to center as Montenegro tagged up on the play and scored.

The next Wagner batter, Mazzio, ripped a double to left center field, scoring Silvestrone on the play as the Green & White went ahead by two, 3-1. Rider closed the gap in the bottom of the fifth, cutting the Wagner lead to 3-2 on a RBI groundout from Barbiere.  The Broncs added the tying score in the bottom of the sixth as Riley Milhalik scored on a wild pitch.

After the Seahawks went down in order in the top of the ninth, Rider had a chance for the walk-off victory in the bottom of the ninth. Simone led off with a double down the left field line. Pinch-hitter Richie Tecco reached on a throwing error from Robino that allowed Simone to move to third, but he was thrown out trying to score as Mascelli fired a strike to Capra to keep the game knotted at 3-3.

Robino sent the game into extra frames as he got Milhalik looking at strike three and Jake Bender to foul out to first. In the Seahawks' tenth inning, Pecora led off with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a sac-bunt from Mascelli. Mazzio flew out to left center field as Pecora moved up ninety feet on the play but was stranded as Godino grounded out to second, ending the potential threat.

In the bottom of the tenth, the Broncs Kyle Johnson worked a one out walk but Robino was able to get Dallas Clark to ground into the inning ending, 6-4-3 double play ending the frame. LePre came on for Robino in the bottom of the 11th and promptly retired all three batters he saw in propelling Wagner to victory.

The Seahawks resume Northeast Conference (NEC) play this weekend, as they head up to New Britain, CT to begin a four-game series with the defending league champions, the Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils. The series begins on Friday, April 13, with a single-game, nine-inning contest as first-pitch is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
