Staten Island, NY – On day two of Northeast Conference (NEC) play, the Wagner College softball team suffered a a pair of losses to Sacred Heart on sun-splashed Grymes Hill, dropping the opening of the doubleheader by a 3-0 count in nine innings, before falling by a 5-0 decision in game two.
With the two losses, Wagner is now 6-17 on the season and 0-3 in NEC play, while the Pioneers improve to 18-12 overall and 3-1 in conference.
Game 1 – Sacred Heart 3, Wagner 0 (9 innings)
The first contest of the afternoon proved to be a pitcher's duel, as neither team was able to plate a run in regulation.
The Seahawks threatened in the bottom of the eighth, as a walk to junior
Karen Prihoda and a single by sophomore
Zoe Bender gave the Green and White two base runners, but Wagner was unable to push across a a run as the game eventually went into extra innings.
In the ninth, the visiting Pioneers broke through by scoring three unearned runs to take a 3-0 lead.
Offensively, Wagner was led by Bender, who notched three of Wagner's four hits in the contest, with sophomore
Kaila Smith also contributing a hit.
Senior
Morgan Brown threw nine strong innings without giving up an earned run, striking out nine batters, while Sacred Heart's Kristen McCann went the distance in earning the shutout victory.
Game 2 – Sacred Heart 5, Wagner 0
The Seahawks and the Pioneers again found themselves in a low-scoring battle early on, with Sacred Heart taking a 1-0 lead in the third inning.
Prihoda, Bender, as well as sophomores
Alyssa Tucker and
Hannah Lewis each recorded a hit offensively for Wagner, but the Seahawks were unable to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.
The Pioneers pulled away in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to extend their lead to 5-0.
In the circle, freshman
Arielle Koerber suffered the loss after throwing five innings, while junior
Ciera Luna tossed two scoreless innings in relief.
Next up, the Seahawks travel to Queens for a midweek non-conference matchup with St. John's, scheduled for Wednesday, April 4, at 2:30 pm.
