Philadelphia, PA – The Wagner College softball team earned a 13-11 victory over Drexel in its last non-conference game of the season, in gaining a split of today's doubleheader with the Dragons on Wednesday afternoon.
In game one, the Green and White fell by a score of 14-5.
Heading into Northeast Conference (NEC) play, the Seahawks now sit at 6-14 on the season, while the Dragons are an even 9-9-1 following today's twinbill.
Game 2: Wagner 13, Drexel 11
In a wild, high-scoring game, the Seahawks fell behind 3-0 in the first inning, before senior
Maddie Marable made it 3-1 on an RBI single in the top of the second. After the Dragons countered with one run in the bottom half of the second, Wagner took control with four runs in the third, as a three-run shot by junior
Jessica Carlucci and a solo homer by sophomore
Kaila Smith gave the Seahawks a 5-4 advantage.
In the fourth, Wagner once again scored four runs to take a seemingly comfortable advantage on RBI singles by junior
Karen Prihoda, senior
Stefanie Aplin, and Carlucci.
In the sixth, Carlucci continued her huge afternoon, belting her second home run of the afternoon, scoring Aplin to extend the Wagner lead to 11-4.
The Dragons would answer with four runs in the sixth, before Wagner hit its fourth home run of the afternoon in the seventh, a two-run shot by Prihoda.
Drexel scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh, but it wasn't enough, as the Seahawks held on for the 13-11 victory.
Freshman
Arielle Koerber earned the win in the circle, while junior
Ciera Luna pitched 1.1 innings in relief.
Carlucci led the Seahawks with three hits and six RBIs, while Prihoda had three hits and 3 RBIs, as Wagner outhit Drexel 13-11 on the afternoon.
Game 1: Drexel 14, Wagner 5
The Seahawks got off to a hot start, taking a 5-0 lead in the top of the second inning.
Following a Carlucci single, Smith homered for the first time on the afternoon, to give the Seahawks a 2-0 lead. Five batters later, Prihoda hit a two-run double to center field, bringing in Marable and junior
Lauren Serrato, which doubled the Wagner lead. Next up, Bender singled, bringing in Prihoda to cap the five-run frame.
Drexel immediately answered, tying the game in the bottom half of the second before scoring three runs in the third, two in the fourth, and four in the fifth en route to the 14-5 victory.
The Seahawks managed just five hits in the contest. Sophomore
Amelia Van Orman suffered the loss in the circle after taking over in relief of senior
Morgan Brown, who threw 2.2 innings, striking out two batters.
Next up, the Seahawks open NEC play with their first set of hame games this season with back-to-back home doubleheaders against LIU Brooklyn and Sacred Heart on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
