Fresh Meadows, NY – The Wagner women's tennis team secured its second win of the spring season while also remaining undefeated in Northeast Conference (NEC) action, as they defeated the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, 5-2, on Sunday afternoon at the Cunningham Tennis Center.
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 5-5 on the season and 2-0 in league contest while the Terriers fall to 1-10 and winless in conference tilts (0-4).
The Green & White took two of three doubles matches to post the first point in the overall match. Sophomore
Vedika Anand and junior
Rina Baynes improved to 2-0 as a team this season, getting past Andrea Rojo/Runsi Patro, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.
St. Francis Brooklyn took the second match at No. 3 play as Jean-Na Koo and Ana Orozco edged the Seahawk duo of seniors
Brenda Cumpa and
Carolyn Gibson, 6-3, setting up the deciding match at No. 2.
In a back-and-forth match, Wagner's pairing of freshman
Fidan Khalilzade and senior
Samantha Hodges earned a 6-4 win over Laura Dimante/Sara Stankovic, giving the visitors a 1-0 overall lead.
The Seahawks raced out winning the first two singles matches at No. 2 and No. 1, in building a 3-0 advantage in the overall match. Baynes was a straight set winner over Rojo while Anand bested Dimante, 6-3; 6-1 at No. 1 action.
The Terriers got on the board at No. 3 as Koo bested Khalilzade, 6-3; 7-5. The Seahawks recorded their fourth victory of the match when sophomore
Melanie Post got past Orozco, 6-2; 7-5 to help Wagner solidify the victory.
The Seahawks return home on Thursday, March 29, as they continue NEC-play with a home match against the Mount St. Mary' Mountaineers beginning at 9:00 a.m.
