Woodbridge, NJ – After dropping all three doubles matches, the Wagner women's tennis team was able to rally back and defeat the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 4-3, at The Club at Woodbridge.
With the victory, the Seahawks remain undefeated in Northeast Conference (NEC) action at 3-0 while running their overall record to 6-5. The Mountaineers falter to 2-11 and 0-2 in conference play.
After the visitors secured the first overall point of the match, the Seahawks knotted the game at 1-1 as sophomore
Vedika Anand defeated Alexa Quintanilla, 6-3; 6-2, at No. 1 singles play. Freshman
Fidan Khalilzade rallied at No. 3 play after dropping the first set, 4-6, to win 7-6, 6-1, and put Wagner ahead 2-1.
The Mount's Hannah Davis was able to get past
Rina Baynes, 6-3, 3-6, 6-2, knotting the contest at 2-2. Senior
Brenda Cumpa gave the Green & White a 3-2 lead after picking up a 6-3; 6-2 triumph at No. 5.
For the third time in the match, the visitors evened the score at 3-3, as Megan Gamble outlasted senior
Samantha Hodges, 7-5; 5-7; 7-5, at No. 4, setting up a winner-take-all at No. 6.
In a contest that went back-and-forth, sophomore
Melanie Post dropped the first set, 2-6, to Emma Blake. The Wilmington, NC native was able to bounce back in the second set, picking up a 6-3 win, which sent the contest to a third set. In the final set of the match, Post sealed the victory with a 6-4 winner to keep the Seahawks undefeated in NEC-play.
The women's tennis teams returns to the courts on Friday, April 6, as they continue conference play with a 3:00 p.m. match against the visiting Sacred Heart University Pioneers.
