Plymouth Meeting, PA- The Wagner baseball team extended its winning streak to seven straight with an 8-4 victory over Big East member, Villanova, on Sunday afternoon.
Â
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 10-8 on the season while the Wildcats fall to 4-11.
Additionally, the seven-game win streak is the third longest during head coach
Jim Carone's tenure, as back in 2013, his Seahawk squad rattled off eight straight wins, starting from March 24, 2013 through April 1, 2013. The last time the Seahawks won seven-straight was back in 2015 from March 14 through April 2.Â
Â
Four Seahawks produced multi-hit performances on the afternoon, led by senior LF
Anthony Godino, who went 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBIs. Classmate
Nick Mascelli also had two hits and scored twice while fellow senior
Kyle Cala drove in a run while going 1-for-5. Juniors
Will Johnson and
Phil Capra were also credited with an RBI in the victory.
Â
Junior LHP
Koby Bishop (2-0), making his second start of the season, gave up just two hits and one earned run while walking two and striking out a career-high six batters over five innings in earning the victory.
Â
David Gulati led the way for the Wildcats, going 4-for-5 with a run scored. Ryan Toohers picked up two hits in four chances while driving in one. John Heilenback and Chris Rotondo also had an RBI in defeat. Jimmy Kingsbury (0-3), who took the loss today, lasted 5.1 innings, allowing two earned runs on six hits while walking one and striking out two.
Â
Wagner got on the board in the first thanks to a two-out RBI single to left field from Godino, who brought in Mascelli for the game's first run. Pitching took over, as both sides did not allow a run over the next three frames before the Seahawks struck again in the top of the fifth.
Â
The Green & White got its second run of the contest on another two-out hit as Capra drove a double to right, plating home senior
Sean Mazzio. Villanova cut the deficit in half, 2-1, in the bottom of the sixth as Rotondo drew a four-pitch walk with the bases loaded, which brought in Josh Kim.
Â
Godino produced his second RBI of the game in top of the seventh as the Thornwood, NY native singled to left field to score junior
Joe Silvestrone. Mazzio also came around to score after the Nova left fielder was charged with a fielding error on the play. Â
Villanova answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning, cutting Wagner's lead to 4-2, as Toohers sent a single to right center on a 3-1 pitch that scored Kim.
Â
In the ninth, the Seahawks tacked on four more tallies in extending their lead to 8-2. In the ninth, the visitors sent nine batters to plate with two of the four runs coming on base hits from Cala and Johnson.
The Wildcats made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth, scoring twice to trim their deficit to 8-4.
Â
Heilenbach reached on an infield single to second and moved up a base off a throwing error by Mascelli, which scored both Gulati and Kim. JP Radvany came on as pinch-hitter and singled to left field with Helienbach trying to score but Godino fired a laser to home plate as Capra applied the tag to end the contest.
Â
Wagner is scheduled for its home opener on Wednesday, March 21 as the Seahawks welcome Monmouth.
