Bronx, NY – With two outs in the top of the tenth, senior
Sean Mazzio blasted what turned out to be the game-winning, three-run home run over the right field wall as the Wagner baseball team extended its winning streak to four with a 10-7 victory at Fordham this afternoon.
The Seahawks improve to 7-8 on the season while the Rams fall to 8-5-1 and see its modest two-game win streak over Wagner snapped in the process.
Mazzio led the way for the visitors on the afternoon, going 3-for-6 with two runs scored and the three-run round-tripper. Junior 1B/C
Phil Capra, the reigning Northeast Conference (NEC) Co-Player of the Week, continued to remain hot, picking up two hits in four chances, including his team-leading sixth home run of the season and his team-leading 21st RBI.
Newcomer LF
Ben Montenegro notched his first collegiate multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a RBI. Senior CF
Anthony Godino and classmate
Kyle Cala combined to drive in three runs with Godino credited with two on the afternoon.
For the fourth consecutive game, Wagner got on the board first as Capra belted a solo home run to right putting the Green & White up 1-0.
With two outs in the home half of the first, the Rams were able to go ahead by one, 2-1. Matt Tarabek laced a single down the left field line while Justin Bardwell worked a walk. Wagner starter,
Pat Gallagher, fired a wild pitch that allowed both runners to move into scoring position, both of whom were driven by a Nick Labella two-run single to center, giving the Rams the one-run advantage.
After both teams put up zeros over the next three frames, Fordham erupted with four runs in building a 6-1 lead. Billy Godrick kicked off the stanza reaching on a bunt single and moved to second after a free pass to Alvin Melendez. Tarabek singled up the middle to plate Godrick and a batter later, Bardwell delivered a two-run double to left, scoring both Melendez and Tarabek. The Rams capped the scoring as Jake MacKenzie reached on a fielder's choice to short, scoring Bardwell.
The Green & White quickly regained control of the contest, as Wagner scored six runs on five hits while capitalizing on three Fordham mishaps in taking a 7-6 lead in the top of the sixth. Mazzio and Capra each reached on back-to-back base hits and following a punchout of sophomore
Freddy Sabido, Godino was able to plate both runners in on a double to left center field.
Wagner remained in the until the bottom of the ninth, when Fordham was able to knot the game at 7-7, thanks in large part to Godrick, who started the ninth with a walk and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Melendez. Godrick then stole third and scored on a two-out double to right field by Bardwell. The Rams had a chance for the walk-off win when Labella reached on an infield single, which moved Bardwell to third. The Seahawks went to the bullpen, bringing in sophomore right-hander
Nick Robino, who was able to retire MacKenzie on a fly out to left, stranding the runner and sending the game into extra frames.
In the tenth, sophomore
Tyler Sanfillippo walked on four pitches and moved to second when
Eric Lauk singled through the left side. Senior
Nick Mascelli grounded out back to the pitcher, advancing both runners in the process, which set up Mazzio's heroics. The veteran Seahawk ripped a Melendez 2-2 pitch to right to put Wagner ahead 10-7 as the Green & White dugout roared in excitement. Robino was able to work a 1-2-3 bottom of the inning, retiring the final two batters via strikeout, in earning his third win of the season (3-1).
Gallagher, who did not factor into the decision, lasted four innings, giving up six hits and two earned runs while walking two and striking out three. His counterpart, Brian Weissert, tossed five frames for the Rams, allowing just three hits, an earned run, a walk and striking out five Seahawks.
