Stanford, CA – The Wagner College softball team picked up a 5-4 victory over CSU Bakersfield for the series sweep on day two of the Stanford Eastin Classic, hosted by Stanford University.
In game one of the day, the Seahawks dropped an 8-0 decision to the Cardinal.
Following back-to-back splits in two days of competition, the Seahawks now stand at 4-9 on the season and will close out the tournament with one more game against Stanford tomorrow.
Game 2: Wagner 5, CSU Bakersfield 4
The Seahawks started strong with two runs apiece in the first two innings.
Junior
Karen Prihoda led off the contest with a walk and proceeded to steal second and advance to third on a wild pitch. Consecutive walks to sophomore
Zoe Bender, who also stole second, and senior
Stefanie Aplin set Wagner up with the bases loaded.
A flyout by junior
Jessica Carlucci allowed Prihoda to score, while a sacrifice bunt by junior
Lauren Serrato brought home Bender to double the Wagner lead early on.
In the second inning, a double by senior
Maite Reece, a Prihoda single, and a walk to Bender set Wagner up with the bases loaded for the second straight frame.
The Green and White capitalized again, as Aplin singled through the left side to score Reece, while a single by Serrato two batters later allowed Bender to score her second run of the contest.
After scoring one run in the bottom half of the first inning, the Roadrunners added a run in the third and one in the fourth to inch closer, but a solo shot by sophomore
Kaila Smith in the fifth extended the lead to 5-3.
In the bottom of the seventh, CSU Bakersfield threatened, scoring one run and moving the tying run into scoring position, but a game-ending double play preserved the 5-4 victory for the Seahawks.
In the circle, senior
Morgan Brown earned her first victory of the season, throwing all seven innings while striking out a season-high five batters.
Game 1: Stanford 8, Wagner 0
In front of 392 fans at Smith Family Stadium, the Seahawks had their best scoring opportunity in the third, when sophomore
Alyssa Tucker singled up the middle, but was unable to advance into scoring position.
Stanford got on the board in the second inning on a solo shot by Kristina Inouye, before adding five runs in the fourth and two in the fifth for the 8-0 victory.
Freshman
Arielle Koerber was charged with the loss, evening her season mark at 3-3.
First pitch for tomorrow's final game between the Seahawks and Cardinal is set for 11 am PT.
