No. 17 Women's Water Polo Opens MAAC Play With Dominant Wins Over La Salle and Siena

 The 17th-ranked Wagner women's water polo team picked up wins against La Salle University and Siena College on Saturday to open the 2018 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) regular season on Saturday, handing the Explorers a 21-2 loss before defeating the Saints by a 21-5 count in the nightcap.

In addition to giving the Seahawks a 2-0 start to conference play, today's victories, which came by a combined margin of 42-7, improves Wagner's overall record to 10-6.

Game One: Wagner 21, La Salle 2

The Green & White dominated La Salle in the first half, holding the Explorers scoreless in the first 16 minutes of play and rallying off a dozen goals of its own for a 12-0 advantage. The second half followed a similar script to the first as Wagner outscored La Salle 9-2 following the break.

Sophomore attack Jacqui Sjogren led the offense with a season-high eight goals, one goal shy of a triple-hat trick. Senior utility Kimberly Watson and redshirt sophomore utility Kristy Donkin each tallied hat tricks, while freshman utility Daisy Nankervis added two goals. Scoring one goal apiece were senior attack Elise Begg, sophomore attack Franciska Milo-Sidlo, freshman utility Julia Luciani, freshman attack Malia Josephson, and junior attack Katelyn Traut.

Defensively, freshman goalie Katherine Campbell blocked 14 shots while the Seahawks combined for 21 total team steals. Begg led the defense, grabbing four steals, followed by senior attack Lacey Anderson and Traut, who snagged three each.

Game Two: Wagner 21, Siena 2

In the second match of the day, Wagner continued to prevail, as Watson led the charge, finding the back of the net six times. Junior attack Erica Hardy recorded four goals, Nankervis added three, and Begg tallied two goals of her own.

Finishing with one apiece were Donkin, Sjogren, and Anderson, as well as freshman attack Allison Long, and junior attack Sarah Limanni.

Campbell recorded eight saves in goal while Hardy grabbed four steals with Anderson and Nankervis tallying three steals apiece..

The Seahawks will conclude the weekend with a 1:30 p.m. matchup against Virginia Military Institute on Sunday, March 11.
