Staten Island, NY - The Wagner men's basketball team will look to make history on Saturday afternoon as the Seahawks host the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds on Senior Day at the Spiro Sports Center. With three games remaining, the Seahawks (19-7; 12-3 NEC) need just one win to lock up their second regular season title in the past three years, and third in program history. The Green & White, with its win on Thursday at Sacred Heart, have already secured a quarterfinal round home game when the NEC Tournament kicks off on February 28.

The Blackbirds (13-15; 8-7 NEC) are looking to snap a two-game losing streak and for the season sweep of the Seahawks, after picking up a 69-67 victory in Brooklyn back on January 13.
2018 SENIOR DAY:
Prior to this afternoon's contest, the Wagner men's basketball will recognize four Seahawks, as well as a pair of student managers, Kyra Alexander and Cassandra Bernard, in a pregame ceremony.

Shack Scott: A Paterson, NJ native and a member of the men's basketball team for the last two seasons, Scott has given the Seahawks valuable minutes this season. After appearing in 18 games last season, Scott missed the first half of the year as he was a member of the Wagner football team before rejoining his teammates on the hardwood against Mercy College back on December 10. The 6-7 forward scored a career-best 10 points on two occasions while corralling a personal-best six caroms on the road at LIU Brooklyn earlier this season. Known for his spectacular and jaw-dropping slam dunks, Scott is currently one of 16 participants competing in the 2018 State Farm Dark Horse Dunker Competition.

AJ Sumbry: An intimidating force in the paint for opposing NEC players this season, the product of East Windsor, NJ, AJ arrived on Grymes Hill for the 2015-16 season. After sitting out that season, the former Quinnipiac forward played in all 30 games in his first season as a Seahawk. He finished third in the NEC in blocks that season, averaging 1.3 per contest. The former St. Benedict's Prep standout has elevated his game on both ends of the floor in 2017-18. In addition to averaging 6.7 points and a team-best 6.9 rebounds per game, he's recorded nine games of at least three blocks while rejecting four shots five different times. In 26 games this season, Sumbry has either led or tied for the team lead in blocked shots 18 times, and 33 times overall in his career. The 6'8" Sumbry also ranks among the top-ten shot blockers in program history, with 88.

JoJo Cooper: A four-year member of the program, who hails from Wilmington, De, Cooper was known as an elite defender among the other nine teams in the conference and this season, the crafty veteran point guard is playing the best basketball of his career. After averaging 8.2 ppg his junior season, Cooper is among the top-15 scorers this season, netting 14.0 ppg, as he has scored in double digits 22 times (and 39 times in his career), while hitting for  20 or more points on four different occasions. The 6-0 Cooper enters today's play as the NEC leader in assists at 6.4 helpers a contest. In fact, for his Seahawk career, which has spanned 117 games, Cooper has dished out a total of 483 helpers, good for seventh on the all-time Seahawk list. Additionally, he has either led or tied for the team high in that category 77 times, which includes a team-best 23 times this season. Entering play today, he has netted 911 career points.

Romone Saunders: The 6' 3" guard has been a part of the program all four years. After averaging 7.9 ppg and close to 10.0 ppg in 2015-16,his 2016-17 season began with tremendous promise. At then 18th-ranked UConn, the Maryland native recorded 15 points, on 5-of-11 shooting from the field before suffering a season-ending injury. Despite missing the first seven games of this season, while continuing to get stronger,Saunders immediately made his presence felt. He has surpassed the 20-point mark nine different times, highlighted by a career-high 30 points at Saint Francis U in front of a nationally-televised audience on ESPNU.

Seahawk Three-Pointers:
  • The Seahawks are one of 15 teams nationwide yet to lose a game on their home court as Wagner extended its win streak to 13 with a 96-76 victory over Bryant on February 8.  The school record for wins at home by a Seahawk team belongs to the 2002-03 squad, coached by Dereck Whittenburg, as his team went 14-1  at home en route to capturing both the NEC regular season and tournament title and concluding the year with a 21-11 overall record (14-4 NEC).
  • As of 2/15/18, Wagner ranks among the top-20 in Offensive Rebounds Per Game (13.04), among the top-25 in Field-Goal Percentage Defense (40.5) and Total Rebounds Per Game (39.54).
  • Wagner holds a three-game lead in the NEC standing with three games to go in the regular season.

With tonight's loss, SHU now falls to 9-19 on the season, 4-11 in league action.
  • Senior guard JoJo Cooper paced an ultra-balanced and efficient team effort, tallying a team-high 23 points, to go along with seven rebounds, six assists, and three steals. • Freshman forward Nigel Jackson played with the same bounce in his step that he displayed early in the season, providing nine points on a perfect shooting night, going 3-for-3 in both field goals and free throws made. Fellow neophyte Chase Freeman also provided a spark off the bench, chipping in nine points on 3-of-5 marksmanship from three-point range.
  • For Sacred Heart, Sean Hoehn led four Pioneers in double-figures as he finished with a game-high 24 point on 8-of-13 shooting from the field in 36 minutes of action. Scouting The LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds:
  • LIU Brooklyn looks to get back in the win column after falling at St. Francis Brooklyn, 84-79, on Thursday evening. Despite the setback, the Blackbirds clinched a berth in the upcoming NEC Tournament while currently tied with Fairleigh Dickinson for the No. 6 spot. '
  • Three Blackbirds are tallying double figures, led by redshirt senior guard Joel Hernandez, who is the circuit's second-leading scorer at 20.2 ppg (20.9 ppg in conference-only contests). Hernandez is among the top-ten in rebounding (10th; 6.3 rpg) and is among the top-15 in three-point field goal percentage (37.2%), and minutes played (32.3).
  • Raiquan Clark is netting 17.0 ppg (8th in the NEC),  to go along with 6.9 rpg (5th in the NEC) while shooting the third-highest field goal percentage at 53.9 percent while converting 76.8 percent from the free-throw line (9th best in the league).

  • LIU Brooklyn guard Julian Batts banked home a contested layup with 1.8 seconds to play and redshirt junior guard Romone Saunders' last-second launch from 40 feet bounded off the rim as the Wagner men's basketball team dropped a heartbreaking 69-67 Northeast Conference (NEC) contest at the Steinberg Wellness Center.
  • In an intense, evenly-played, back-and-forth contest that featured 11 ties and 13 lead changes, Saunders led three Seahawks in double figures with 18 points while senior guard JoJo Cooper and sophomore guard Blake Francis finished with 15 and 11 points, respectively. • For the Blackbirds, Joel Hernandez led the way, matching Saunders for game-high honors with 18, while Batts finished with 11.

Wagner Clinches NEC Quarterfinal Home Game:
  • Wagner became the first team to clinch an NEC Tournament berth and did it just 12 games into the 18-game conference season. The Seahawks punched their ticket to the eight-team NEC tourney on February 3 with a 79-61 win over St. Francis Brooklyn. Wagner has now qualified for the postseason eight straight years and 11 of the last 12 seasons.
  • With its 99-84 road victory at Sacred Heart on Thursday evening, the Seahawks are in the driver's seat, needing just one win to capture the 2018 NEC Regular Season title. Thursday's victory ensured that the Seahawks will host a quarterfinal round contest at the Spiro Sports for the fifth time in the last six seasons under head coach Bashir Mason
  • Wagner holds a three-game lead with three games to go in the regular season.

48th Season Of Being At .500 Or Better:
  • At 19-7 overall on the season, the Seahawks have ensured that they will finish with a .500 record or better for the 48th time in program history.
  • For Coach Mason, it marks the fifth time in his six seasons that he will finish at .500 or better.

Serious Home Cooking:
  • The Spiro Center has turned into a house of horrors for opponents this season, and Wagner head coach Bashir Mason and his players want to keep it that way. With a perfect 13-0 home record this season, Wagner is one of 14 teams nationwide yet to lose in their own gym.
  • Wagner is tied with Clemson of the ACC and Houston of the AAC for the 10th longest home winning streak in the nation this season. Cincinnati (AAC) currently holds the nation's longest win streak at 39 straight home victories.
  • The 13 straight wins at the Spiro Sports Center is a program-record and now the Seahawks will have a chance to match the record for most home wins in a season, 14, set by the 2002-03 squad, that posted a 14-1 home record.
  • Since the Spiro Sports Center opened on February 20, 1999, the Green & White have had nine seasons in which the team has posted double-digit victories, and the first since the 2015-16 season, when that squad, coached by Coach Mason, finished 13-4.
