Jersey City, NJ – The Wagner women's tennis team shut out Saint Peter's, 7-0, on Sunday afternoon in snapping the Seahawks' two-game losing streak.
With the victory, the Green & White improves to 4-2 on the season while the Peacocks fall to 0-9.
Wagner secured the first point of the afternoon after claiming victories at No. 2 and No. 1 doubles. The tandem of seniors
Samantha Hodges and
Brenda Cumpa topped the pairing of Marta Ortega and Jennifer Guilherme, 6-2 at No. 2 play while junior
Rina Baynes and sophomore
Vedika Anand bested Stephanie Falcon and Azuri Hughes, 6-1. Sophomore
Melanie Post and senior
Carolyn Gibson were awarded the victory at No. 3 doubles by default.
In singles action, the Seahawks surrendered just two points in the match with Cumpa, Baynes, and Hodges winning in straight sets (6-0; 6-0) while Anand defeated Falcon, 6-1; 6-1 at No. 1 play in recording the win for Wagner. Gibson and Post were credited with the victory at No. 5 and No. 6 action via default.
The women's tennis team returns to action on Saturday, February 17, as they travel to Hempstead, NY to tangle with Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) members, Hofstra. The match is slated for a 4:00 p.m start time.
