Women's Basketball Concludes 2018 By Defeating Local Rival, College of Staten Island, 86-59, In The Battle Of The Borough

Staten Island, NY – Five Seahawks scored in double figures as the Wagner College women's basketball team topped the College of Staten Island, 86-59, in the Battle of the Borough on Friday evening at the Spiro Sports Center.
 
With the win, the Seahawks closed out its non-conference slate with a 2-9 overall record and improve to 3-0 against their crosstown rivals. The Dolphins, who saw its five-game win streak snapped, fall to 8-3 on the season.
 
Senior guard Nakylia Carter netted a team-high with 15 points to go along with a season-best seven assists in 31 minutes of action. The Oklahoma City, OK native also recorded a team-leading five steals, marking the sixth straight game of at least two steals or more for Carter.
 
Freshman forward Emilija Krista Grava recorded her second straight double digit performance, tallying 13 points to go along with seven rebounds. Redshirt sophomore Taylah Simmons posted her second double-double of the season, finishing with 12 points and team-high ten caroms in her 16 minutes of play.
 


 
Also reaching double figures for the Green & White were junior forward Jordan Hobson and sophomore Khaleah Edwards, each netting 11 points apiece for the home team, who tied a season-high of 86 points, in which they achieved in its 86-60 win over Longwood back on November 14.
 
Wagner scored 12 of the first 15 points of the contest, led by six fast break points from sophomore Alayshia Dailey, who concluded the night with eight points in the contest. Carter led the home team with 10 points, on 3-of-4 shooting, in the opening frame to help the Seahawks jump out to a 30-18 advantage after 10 minutes of play.
 


 
CSI cut Wagner's lead to nine, 30-21, with 9:25 left in the second stanza. The Seahawks answered back with two straight triples from Hobson and Krista Grava to increase their lead to 36-21. Ahead 37-25, the home team scored 11 consecutive points, to increase its advantage to 48-25 as freshman guard Raven Pitt converted on her first collegiate points off the feed from Dailey. 
 


 
The Seahawks held its largest lead of the contest, 28, as Krista Grava scored on a layup after Carter was able to find her in the paint, which propelled Wagner to a 76-48 lead in coasting to a 86-59 victory.
 
For the game, Wagner shot 45.6 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from beyond-the-arc while holding CSI to just 35.0 percent shooting and 28.6 percent from beyond the arc. The Seahawks held a 47-36 advantage on the glass, which included a 27-19 edge on the defensive side.
 
Northeast Conference (NEC) play awaits the Seahawks to open the New Year as Wagner will be on the road for a pair of league games, beginning on January 5 at St. Francis Brooklyn and concluding the road trip at Central Connecticut on January 7.
