Women's Basketball Drops Final Road Non-Conference Contest At Stony Brook On Saturday

Stony Brook, NY – Forwards Emilija Krista Grava and Jordan Hobson each scored in double figures but it wasn't enough as the Wagner College women's basketball team fell to America East members, Stony Brook, 70-45, on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the loss, Wagner falls to 1-9 on the season while the Seawolves earned their tenth straight victory in  improving to 10-1 on the campaign.
 
Hobson had six of her ten points in the first half of action while Krista Grava netted all of her points during the second half of play. The two combined for 20 of Wagner's 45 points on a combined 8-of-17 shooting from the floor. Khaleah Edwards added seven points and six rebounds off the bench while Alayshia Dailey matched Edwards on the boards, finishing with six in 24 minutes of action.
 
Three Seawolves concluded the game in double digits, led by Shania Johnson, who poured in a game-high 18 points while dishing out eight assists and recording four steals in the Stony Brook win. India Pagan finished one rebound shy of a double-double, ending with 15 points and nine caroms while Oksana Gouchie-Provencher filled the stat sheet, recording ten points, seven rebounds, five blocks, two steals and one assist in 23 minutes of play.
 
Stony Brook opened up the contest on a 7-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Gouchie-Provencher. Wagner scored its first bucket of the game at the 7:28 mark of the first quarter, as Hobson dialed up a three from the right corner to put the visitors on the board.  The Seahawks were within two, 7-5, after Edwards was able to hit on a layup after receiving a feed from Hobson.
 
The Seawolves capped the opening period on a 7-0 burst, holding Wagner without a field goal in five chances over the final four minutes in taking a 14-5 lead.
 
Wagner opened the second quarter with back-to-back baskets from Simmons, which brought the Green & White to within five, 14-9, at the 8:33 mark.
 
Johnson, who entered played this afternoon ranked second in the entire NCAA in assists, drilled a deep three from the top-of-the-key, putting the Seawolves ahead 17-9 and sparking what turned into a 15-3 run over the remaining 6:19 to enter the halftime break with a 29-12 lead.
 
The Seahawks were limited to just 21.7 percent shooting in the first half, while both teams struggled from the outside, as the Seahawks, who ranked third in the Northeast Conference (NEC) entering today's game in three-point field goal percentage defense, held SBU to just 28.6 percent from deep in the opening half,
 
Simmons led the Seahawks with four points in the opening half while Edwards pulled down a team-high five caroms in the first twenty minutes of action.
 
Wagner was in the midst of a 9-0 run over the first 1:40 of the third quarter that brought them within 33-21 before Pagan scored the next four points for SBU, increasing their lead to 37-21. Krista Grava was able to put home the jumper in the paint, which cut the lead to 37-23. The Seawolves concluded the third quarter outscoring Wagner, 10-2, over the final 4:07 in taking a 47-25 lead.
 
The Seahawks were able to find their offensive touch in the final frame, connecting on 8-of-13 from the floor (61.5%) while holding Stony Brook to just 2-of-7 from the outside despite being outscored 23-20 in the final period. Redshirt junior guard Janelle Mullen and Edwards each had five points in the frame while freshman Enas Nigatu and sophomore Addie Masonius also recorded baskets for the visitors in the fourth.
 
For the game, Wagner was shot 37.0 percent from the field while hitting on close to 31.0 percent from the outside, as Hobson hit two of Wagner's four three's in the contest. The Seahawks were very aggressive around the glass, outmuscling the Seawolves, 35-29, on the boards.
 
Stony Brook, who was held to just 29.2 percent from long range despite hitting on 45.3 percent from two-point range, turned 27 Seahawks into 26 points while, 11 of which coming on fast break opportunities. The Seawolves were credited with 28 points in the paint to Wagner's 24.
 
Wagner concludes its non-conference schedule at the Spiro Sports Center on Friday, December 21 when the Seahawks host local rival, the College of Staten Island, at 5:00 p.m.
