Jersey City, NJ – The Wagner women's basketball team dug itself out of an early 9-1 hole, forging a 22-22 tie at halftime before Saint Peter's pulled away for a 69-57 win at the Yanitelli Center on Friday night.
In dropping their fifth straight game, the Seahawks fall to 1-7 on the season while the Peacocks of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) improve to 4-2.
Redshirt sophomore guard
Taylah Simmons led Wagner with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting, to go with a team-high eight rebounds. The native of Australia also added two steals, one assists and one blocked shot in a spirited and productive 32-minute stint.
Senior guard Nakyila Carter and sophomore guard
Khaleah Edwards added nine points apiece. Carter, who was a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line, also contributed four rebounds and a steal.
All nine of Edwards' points came on a trio of three-point jumpers in the fourth quarter as the Seahawks hung tough throughout. Junior forward

Emilija Krista Grava chipped in with seven points each.
Saint Peter's was led by D'Aviyon Magazine and Zoe Pero paced the Peacocks with 15 points apiece while Briyanaah Richardson added 13.
Saint Peter's jumped out to a 9-1 lead in this one before the Seahawks responded with an 11-2 run in closing the deficit to one point at 13-12 with two minutes left in the opening frame. At the end of the quarter, Saint Peter's was on top 17-13. Carter paced the Seahawks with four first-quarter points, all coming from the foul line. Hobson and Mullen added three points apiece as each knocked down a try in the opening 10 minutes.
Peacocks' guard Sammy Lochner opened the period with a layup to open a six-point, 19-13 Saint Peter's lead. Wagner scored the next five points, holding the home team scoreless for nearly six minutes as the Seahawks clawed to within one point at 19-18. A one-of-two trip to the line gave Wagner its lone lead of the game, a 22-21 edge with 24 seconds to go in the half. Saint Peter's answered with a free throw of its own with three seconds remaining as the teams headed into the intermission knotted at 22.
Wagner returns home to open the month of December when the Seahawks welcome their second Patriot League opponent of the season in the Army West Point Black Knights on Saturday, December 8.
