Fidan Khalilzade won at No. 1 singles but the Wagner College women's tennis team was defeated, 5-1, in this morning's home opener against UC Irvine.
With the loss, the Seahawks even their record at 1-1 while the Anteaters won their season opener and move to 1-0. This morning's contest was the first-ever meeting between the two schools and Wagner's first-ever match against a member of the Big West Conference.
The Green & White fell in doubles action despite the pairing of team captains, junior
Vedika Anand and senior
Rina Baynes, putting forth a valiant effort at No. 1 action, but ultimately being edged by Stephanie Nguyen and Jessica Tsukiji, 6-4
In singles action, Khalilzade dropped the first set, 7-5, but was able to rally in the second set against Stephanie Nguyen, earning a 6-2 victory to force a third set. In the deciding set, the second-year Seahawk was able to clinch the lone win of the morning, 6-3.
Wagner is back in action on Saturday, October 6, as they will travel to Fairfield, CT to tangle with Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) members, Fairfield, at 12:00 p.m.
