Lawrenceville, NJ – The Wagner College women's tennis team took two of three matches in doubles play followed by winning five of six in singles action to conclude its fall season with a 6-1 road victory at Rider on Tuesday afternoon.
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 3-2 on the season while the Broncs fall to 3-7 overall.
At No. 2 doubles, the freshmen duo of
Emma Reeves and
Samantha Lugtu blanked Amanda Binder/Sydney Jeffrey, 6-0, in securing the win for Wagner. Rider was victorious at No. 1. The Green & White claimed the first point of the match via default at No. 3 play.
Senior
Rina Baynes won her second straight match, defeating Vanessa Canda, 6-1; 1-6; 6-0 at No. 2. For the senior captain, it marked her 23rd career singles victory, tying her with former teammate,
Samantha Hodges ('18), for fourth on the career singles win list.
Lugtu got past Angelica Garcia, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 for her team-leading, sixth singles win of the season. Reeves needed three sets in order to pick up the victory at No. 4, edged Binder, 6-1; 3-6; 6-4. Junior
Melanie Post earned her second win of the year and 11th of her Seahawk career, defeating Sydney Jeffrey, 7-5; 6-3.
The women's tennis team will return to action in 2019, as they are scheduled for 12 matches in the spring, beginning on January 20 as they will take on Sacred Heart in Northeast Conference (NEC) action.
