Scouting The Central Connecticut State University Blue Devils:
  • Central Connecticut, who was predicted to finish ninth in the annual NEC Preseason Coaches' Poll, is currently in a tie for sixth-place in the league standings with LIU Brooklyn at 5-5 in league action and holds an overall record of 12-11.
  • The Blue Devils, who rank second in the conference in field goal percentage at 46.4 percent, have four players averaging double-figures, led by reigning NEC Player of the Week, Tyler Kohl, who is pouring in 15.5 ppg (9th in the NEC).
  • Kohl is also the team's leader in rebounding at 7.8 caroms per contest (3rd in the NEC) and assists at 4.23 per game (5th in the NEC). Kohl nearly averaged a triple-double en-route to his second POTW award of the season as he netted 25.0 ppg, 8.5 rpg, 8.0 apg and 3.5 steals per game.

  • CCSU enters this evening's contest with Wagner looking to bounce back after seeing its four-game win streak snapped at LIU Brooklyn on Saturday, 94-89, in overtime. Six players finished in double-digits for CCSU, led by Kohl's team-high 23 points.

Last Time Out Against Central Connecticut  (February 2, 2017):
  • For the 40th time in his near two-year career, Michael Carey scored in double-figures while Corey Henson was one-point shy of 1,000 for his career as Wagner defeated Central Connecticut 70-60, on at Detrick Gymnasium.
  • Carey finished with a game-high 19 points, 11 of which coming in the opening stanza on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor. In playing the entire game, he tied a team-high with six caroms while dishing out three assists in his 40 minutes of action.

(MORE THAN) HALFWAY HOME, WAGNER SITS ATOP NEC PERCH:
  • We've crossed the halfway point of the NEC regular season and the race for the regular season championship, a top-four spot and one of the eight NEC Tournament berths is starting to heat up.
  • So where do we stand now versus where the teams were predicted by the head coaches back in October?
Preseason Predictions Current Standings
1. Saint Francis U (9) 1. Wagner (8-2)
2. Fairleigh Dickinson (1) 2. Robert Morris (7-3)

  • NEC coaches have proven to be unreliable prognosticators in year's past, and this season is no different.
  • Wagner, picked third in the poll, is now in the driver's seat at 8-2 following a Western PA sweep over the weekend that extended its win streak to four games. The Seahawks impressively knocked off Saint Francis U, 91-61, and Robert Morris, 77-64, the latter a game between the top two teams in the conference standings.
  • The Seahawks have a favorable schedule over the next four weeks, playing just two teams with winning NEC records. The combined won-loss percentage of Wagner's upcoming opponents is .425. The Seahawks begin a three-game homestand taking on CCSU and St. Francis Brooklyn this week.

Cooper Keeping Good Company:
  • JoJo Cooper's terrific all-around numbers for first place Wagner this season have elevated him to quite the lofty perch.
  • Cooper is currently one of only two players in the nation this season averaging at least 14 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game on the year. Jon Elmore of Marshall has also reached these minimums.
  • If the senior guard maintains those statistical plateaus for the remainder of the season, he would be just the 10th player in the last 25 years to end the year as a 14p/5.5r/6a/1.5s man.
  • How exclusive is that list?
  • Of the nine players who have achieved the statistical feat, seven have played in the NBA, including current ballers Kyle Anderson (Spurs), Lonzo Ball (Lakers) and Kyle Collinsworth (Mavericks). The list also includes former NBA All-Stars Jason Kidd and Penny Hardaway, and former NBA players Luke Walton and Eddie Gill.

Blake Francis Named Metropolitan Basketball Writers' Association Division I Player Of The Week:
  • Sophomore guard Blake Francis (Herndon, VA/Westfield) was tabbed Division I Player of the Week by the Metropolitan Basketball Writers' Association (MBWA), it was announced on Tuesday.
  • For Francis, this marks the first MBWA Player of the Week citation of his career. The second-year Seahawk has earned two Honorable Mention honors from the MBWA, the most recent for the week of December 4-10.
  • In earning the organization's weekly honor, the Seahawks have now had back-to-back Met Player of the Week choices for the first time in program history, as Francis' honor follows that of senior guard JoJo Cooper, who was chose the week of January 15-21.
  • Additionally, the Seahawk backcourt tandem become just the second pair of teammates to earn the award in the same season, joining Seton Hall's Desi Rodriguez, who was named MBWA Player of the Week for Nov. 27-Dec.3 and Angel Delgado, who received the citation for the week of January 1-7.
  • The second-year sharpshooter continued to enhance on his already spectacular season, proving to be a valuable asset off the bench as Wagner went 2-0 this week as the Seahawks recorded their first 4-0 season sweep of Saint Francis U and Robert Morris in nearly 15 years.
  • In helping to lead Wagner to its 2-0 Western Pennsylvania trip, Francis averaged 21.5 points per game while logging 30.0 minutes in a reserve role.
  • In 29 minutes against Saint Francis U on Friday, January 26, a contest that was nationally televised on ESPNU, Francis registered ten first-half points in 12 minutes off-the-bench in leading the Green & White to a 46-33 halftime lead. When play resumed, Francis poured in another 12 points on 4-of-6 shooting in 17 minutes in helping the Seahawks secure a dominant 91-61 victory over the Red Flash. For the game, Francis finished 8-of-11 from the floor (73%), highlighted by a 6-of-8 (75%) display from three-point range.
  • On Sunday, January 28, in a first-place showdown between Wagner and Robert Morris from at PPG Paints Arena, the sophomore guard struggled early in the contest, scoring just four points in 12 minutes on a 1-of-5 shooting from the field as Wagner found itself facing a ten-point halftime deficit, 42-32.
  • When play resumed for the second half, Wagner came out on fire, thanks in large part to Francis. In all, the visiting Seahawks erupted on a 25-6 run over a 10:40 stretch in taking a 59-48 lead with 9:03 left in regulation as Francis was a key catalyst in the run, accounting for 14 of the Seahawks' 25 points, as he converted 5-of-6 from the field while draining four three-pointers. In the eventual 77-64 win over RMU, Francis shot 7-of-13 from the field, including 5-of-8 marksmanship from deep.

Milestone For Coach Mason:
  • Head coach Bashir Mason, who is currently the sixth-youngest active head coach in Division I, reached a coaching career milestone on Saturday, January 20.
  • In Wagner's 62-49 home victory over Robert Morris back on January 20th, Coach Mason earned his 100th career coaching victory.
  • In the process, Coach Mason became just the third Seahawk bench boss to eclipse the 100 career wins, joining former coaches Herb Sutter  (352) and Tim Capstraw (117).
  • Additionally, Coach Mason and Capstraw are the only two Seahawk coaches to reach 100 wins in the Division I era, which began in the 1976-77, under Wagner Hall of Famer and 3x-time NBA Champion, P.J. Carlesimo

Spiro Sports Center Magic:
  • The Spiro Center has turned into a house of horrors for opponents this season, and Wagner head coach Bashir Mason and his players want to keep it that way. With a perfect 10-0 home record this season, Wagner is one of 33 teams nationwide yet to lose in its own gym.
  • This marks the first time since the 2007-08 season in which the Seahawks have strung together at least 10 straight home victories as that 07-08 squad rattled off 11 straight from December 8, 2007 (64-59 win over St. Francis Brooklyn) until March 6, 2008 (71-62 victory over LIU Brooklyn in the Northeast Conference Quarterfinals). The Green & White dropped a 55-49 decision to Sacred Heart in the semifinals round, that was played at the Spiro Sports Center.
  • The 10-0 home start marks the first time that the Seahawks have done so since the 2001-02 season, in which that squad, coached by former NC State standout, Dereck Whittenburg, opened the year with 88-73 home victory over Iona on December 4, 2001. The Green & White rattled off nine more home victories, concluding with a 99-88 win over St. Francis Brooklyn on February 11, 2002.
  • How rare would it be for the Seahawks to go undefeated at home for the entire season? In the history of the NEC, only five teams have posted unblemished home records with LIU Brooklyn being the most recent. The Blackbirds went 15-0 at the Steinberg Wellness Center en-route to winning the second of three straight NEC championships.
  • In fact, the five teams that went unbeaten at home all won the NEC regular season championship and four of the five captured NEC Tournament titles.

Wagner's Sultan Of Swat:
  • Drive down the lane against Wagner and you're bound to run into junior forward AJ Sumbry, the league's premier shot blocker.
  • In fact, Sumbry is the current runaway leader in the NEC in rejections with 2.14 per game, more than a block more than any other player on the circuit. He's been even better in league play with 2.50 per contest,
  • Sumbry has been so good that he also ranks 14th nationally in block percentage (12.43), meaning he swats close to 13 percent of two-point shot opportunities taken by Wagner opponents.

Pair of Seahawks Moving Up The Career Charts:
  • Senior guard JoJo Cooper moved into sole possession of eighth place on the Wagner all-time career assists list, as he has dished out 447 career helpers, passing former three-time NEC Defensive Player of the Year, Kenneth Ortiz. Next up for Cooper is Tony Rice, who is eight assists ahead of Cooper at 455.
