West Point, NY – The Wagner women's tennis team concluded their first in-season tournament of the season at the Army West Point Invitational, which was played over three-days from September 22 through September 24.
Freshman
Fidan Khalilzade (Baku, Azerbaijan/Respublican Olympic Sports Lyecum) advanced to the semifinals of the "B" bracket which highlighted the Seahawks performance at the three-day tournament.
"A" Draw:
Sophomore
Vedika Anand (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School) was the lone Seahawk representative in the singles competition of the "A" bracket of the tournament. In the Round of 32, Anand was bested by Quinnipiac's Payton Bradley, 6-1; 6-1.
In doubles action, Anand and senior
Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) teamed together in the "A" doubles competition as they faced the pairing from fellow Northeast Conference (NEC) members, Bryant, in Nina Luiggi and Ashanti Campfield.
"A" Consolation:
Anand was edged in the consolation "A" bracket round of 16 by Marist's Julia Gabay, 8-6. In doubles, both Anand/Hodges took on Lehigh's Sibel Can/Paula Rodriguez in the round of the 16, 6-1.
"B" Draw:
Khalizade defeated Colgate's Lauren O'Brien in the round of 32 (6-3; 2-6; 10-7) to advance to the round of 16 where she was pitted against Fordham's Maia Balce.
In another three-set match, the first-year Seahawk was able to get by her opponent, 7-5; 3-6; 10-8, advancing to the semifinals, where she would meet Army's Ana Joyner. Khalizade dropped a 6-2; 6-4 decision Joyner, who was edged in the finale by Syracuse's Maria Tritou.
In doubles play, Khalizade and senior
Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) advanced to the round of 16 after picking up a 6-1 victory over Sophia Suri and Catherine Meighan.
Senior
Carolyn Gibson (San Marcos, CA/IMG Academy [FL]) and teammate
Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) were also involved in the "B" doubles bracket, taking on Balce and Gianna Insogna of Fordham but were edged, 6-2.
"B" Consolation:
Gibson/Baynes took on Fairfield's Meghan Zimmer and Gabriella Campos. In a back-and-forth match, the Seahawk duo was outlasted by the Stags, 6-4.
"C" Draw:
Cumpa, Baynes and Hodges were all in the "C" bracket of the Invitational. All three Seahawks put forth valiant efforts in the Round of 32 despite falling in the Round of 32.
"C" Consolation:
Cumpa lost a hard fought 8-7 (6) match in the Round of 16 to Bryant's Megan Tan. Baynes fell to Bryant's Stefanie Arroyo, 8-2, while Hodges was blanked by eventual champion, Maria Pandya, 8-0.
"D" Draw:
Gibson and Fairfield's Courtney Connors were matched up in the Round of 32 of the "D" bracket. In another hard fought, down-to-the-wire match, Gibson was edged by Connors, 7-5; 7-6 (3). Sophomore
Melanie Post (Wilmington, NC/John T. Hoggard) fell to Marist's Amy Galloway, 6-1; 6-4.
"D" Consolation:
Gibson and Post competed in the "D" consolation as Gibson fell to Carolina Sa, 8-2, while Post dropped an 8-4 decision to Leigh Friedman of Lehigh, who advanced to the finals against Seton Hall's Anniek Jansen.
