West Windsor, NJ – The No. 6 seeded Wagner College women's tennis team's season came to an end at the 2017 Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, falling to the No. 3 seed, Fairleigh Dickinson, in the quarterfinals on Friday.
The Seahawks conclude the year at 11-9 while the Knights move on in the tournament and improve to 8-8 on the season. For Wagner, the 11 wins under first-year head coach,
Aida Castany, are the most in the program since conference switched to a seeding format for its tournament, dating back to 1998.
The Green & White avoided the sweep in the doubles portion of the match as the pairing of senior
Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) and junior
Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) finished the year at 8-3 after defeating Liza Rachenko and Patricia Eftenoiu, 6-3. For Pautsch, the victory marked her 31
st career doubles win, which is now a new Wagner record as she surpassed former teammates, Rachel Jurgielewicz ('15), mark of 26 wins in doubles action.
FDU clinched the match after recording wins at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 6 singles as they move on to Saturday's semifinals, in which they will take on the No. 2 seed, Bryant University.
The Seahawks and coach Castany will return eight members of the 2016-17 team next season as Pautsch and fellow senior,
Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School {Southeastern Louisiana]) will be graduating in May.
Pautsch concludes her four-year Seahawk career with a program-record 29 singles wins since 2005 while Sagwal, who arrived on campus from Southeastern Louisiana a season ago, finishes her two-year stint on Grymes Hill with a 24-15 record and a doubles record of 20-21.
