Women's Tennis Defeats Monmouth In Regular Season Finale; Pautsch Gets Program-Leading 29th Career Win

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College women's tennis team closed out the 2016-17 regular season with a 5-2 victory over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) members, Monmouth, on Wednesday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Seahawks close out the year at 11-8 while the Hawks fall to 5-12.
 
Before the start of this afternoon's contest, the Seahawks recognized their two seniors, Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana] and Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison).


 
The Seahawks took two of three doubles matches in securing the first point of the match. The tandem of Sagwal and sophomore Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) improved to 7-7 on the season after securing a 6-2 victory at No. 2.
 
The duo of junior Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru / Carmelitas [West Virginia State University] and Pautsch also earned their seventh win in doubles play, after picking up a 6-4 win at No. 3 doubles as Wagner took a 1-0 lead in the overall match.
 
26147The Green & White took four of the six singles matches in earning their 11th triumph of the season. In a personal milestone, Pautsch earned her 29th career singles victory, after getting past Caroline Mattise, 6-0; 6-1. The victory moved Pautsch to become Wagner's career wins leader, passing former Seahawk, Brittany Frazza, who had 28. Pautsch's 29 career wins are the most since 2005, when the Northeast Conference (NEC) started cataloging season statistics. 

Sagwal was victorious at No. 2, earning a 6-2, 6-1 win over Victoria Nugent in picking up her 24th career singles win. Junior Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA /San Dieguito Academy) earned her 17th career victory after defeating Chioma Gabriel, 6-1; 6-2. Cumpa secured her 12th singles win of the season, matching Sagwal, after besting Maria Ivanova, 6-3; 6-0.
 
The Seahawks will next be in action on Friday, April 21, as they are the No. 6 seed in the NEC Tournament and will take on the No. 3 seed, Fairleigh Dickinson at 11:30 a.m. from the Mercer County Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ.
