Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's tennis team was shutout in Northeast Conference (NEC) action on Monday afternoon, 7-0, at the Wagner Tennis Courts.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in league action while the Blackbirds improve to 8-5 and remain perfect in league contests at 4-0.
The Seahawks fought for every point this afternoon despite the Blackbirds taking all seven matches. In No. 1 doubles, the pairing of freshman
Vedika Anand (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School) and junior
Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) battled the duo of Anna Grigoryan/Ana Leonte with the match going back-and-forth but ultimately Grigoryan/Leonte was able to edge Anand/Hodges, 7-5.
Similarly, in No. 2 Flight doubles, senior
Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana]) and sophomore
Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) was pitted against Sasha Bollweg and Malin Leysen. In another contest that went down to the wire, LIU was able to hold on for the victory, defeating Sagwal/Baynes, 7-6 (7-5).
In singles competition, junior
Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) narrowly earned a victory for the Seahawks at No. 5 singles, but was defeated by Leonte, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 (10-4).
The Seahawks return to action on Friday, April 14 as they welcome the Bryant University Bulldogs in the final NEC regular season contest of the 2016-17 season. The match is set to begin at 2:00 p.m. from the Wagner Tennis Courts.
