Newark, DE - The Wagner baseball team dropped the opening game of the Delaware Invitational to the host Blue Hens by the score of 21-8 on Thursday afternoon. With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-7 while Delaware evens their record at 6-6.
Freshman DH
Freddy Sabido (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner [Saint Louis University]) had himself a career afternoon, finishing the game 3-for-4 with two runs scored, a team-high five RBIs, four of which coming on his first career grand slam. Sabido was just a triple shy of the cycle and also threw a scoreless inning of relief, recording his first career strikeout and walk in the four batters faced.

Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesainum School [DE]) also had three hits on the afternoon, one of which was a solo home run, his second of the season. Sophomore catcher

Ryan Lauk (Mullica Hill, NJ/Clearview Regional) took the loss in his first start of the season, lasting two innings. Fellow newcomer
Ethan Pritchett (Camden, NJ/Neumann-Goretti) appeared in his third game of the season, striking out three batters.
Delaware raced out to an early 3-0 lead on the strength a Nick Patten three-run home run to right field. Wagner was able to get one back in the top of the second as Sabido doubled to left field on a 2-2 pitch as junior RF
Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) scored from second. The Blue Hens tacked on five in the bottom half of the frame. Diaz Nardo jumped started the inning for Delaware with a leadoff home run to the right. Facing two outs, Doug Trimble singled home Nick Tierno. Ake drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Jordan Glover before Calvin Scott doubled to center scoring both Patten and Trimble as the Blue Hens led 8-1. Delaware added two more runs in the third and fourth to take a 12-1 lead.
Wagner chipped away at the lead in the top of the fifth, closing the gap to 12-5. Capra singled to right field with one out that got the momentum started for the visitors. A pair of walks to Cala and junior
Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) loaded the bases for Sabido. The 6-7 Staten Island native fouled off the first two pitches before clearing the bases with his first career home run and first grand slam as the Green & White trailed 12-5.
The Blue Hens responded in the bottom half of the frame with four more runs, upping its lead to 16-5. Following a RBI single from Scott, Brian Mayer belted a three-run home run over the left field wall. Delaware added three more in the bottom of the sixth, taking a 19-5 lead. Wagner was able to score one in the top of the seventh as Mazzio belted his second home run of the year to right center. The Blue Hens plated their final two tallies in the bottom of the seventh, as Tierno scored on a Mike Krusinski double and Patten drove him in with a single to center. The Seahawks scored the game's final two runs. In the top of the eighth, junior 2B
Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) scored after Pecora was retired on a 4-6-3 double play. In the ninth, Johnson plated Sabido on an RBI grounder to the third baseman.
The Seahawks will be back in action at 11:00 a.m. as they will take on the Bighamton University Bearcats on day two of the Delaware Invitational.
