Staten Island, NY - After eight straight road contests, the Wagner women's tennis team came back to the Wagner Tennis Courts and earned a thrilling 4-3 victory over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) members, Fairfield, on Wednesday afternoon.
With the win, the Seahawks, who have won back-to-back matches, improve to 9-5 on the season while the Stags fall to 3-11. Today's triumph runs the Seahawks record to 5-0 against teams from the MAAC this season.
The Green & White took two of three matches in doubles play to take an early 1-0 lead in the overall game. The pairing of senior
Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana]) and sophomore
Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) earned their fifth doubles triumph of the season, downing the tandem of Emily Lombardi/Jessica Pil, 6-3. Junior
Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) and senior
Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) improve to a team-best 6-1 as a team, picking up a 6-1 victory over Shelby Vertula/Meghan Zimmer.
Sagwal notched career victory No. 22 as she defeated Nicole Aragones, 6-4; 6-3, in earning her fifth win out of the No. 2 Flight position.
Pautsch moved to within one victory of tying Brittany Frazza's career wins total (28) as Pautsch outlasted Lombardi, 7-6 (7-5), 7-5 at Flight No. 6 position. Cumpa tied Sagwal with her tenth singles victory of the season, besting Vertula 6-3; 6-2.
The Green & White, who will remain home for the remainder of the season, are set to welcome the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights on April 9 at 10:00 a.m. in a Northeast Conference (NEC) match.
