Queens, NY - The Wagner baseball team dropped its midweek contest, 6-2, to No. 5 ranked St. John's at Jack Kaiser Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. With the loss, the Seahawks falter to 3-13 overall while the Red Storm improves to 19-2 on the season.
Freshman
Ethan Pritchett (Camden, NJ/Neumann-Goretti) made his first collegiate start, tossing 4.1 innings in defeat. Pritchett allowed one hit, four runs, three of which were earned while walking five and striking out four batters.
At the plate, junior SS
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE] went 3-for-4 at the dish this afternoon with a run scored. Junior RF
Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial), freshman DH
Freddy Sabido (Staten Island, NY/Susan E. Wagner [Saint Louis Univ]) and sophomore CF
Joe Silvestrone (Manalapan, NJ/Freehold Township) also had a hit in the contest, with Cala and Sabido driving in the only runs on the afternoon.
The No. 5 ranked Red Storm got on the board first in the bottom of the first inning as a Jesse Berardi grounded into a 4-6-3 double-play allowing John Valente to score.
In the top of the third, the Seahawks evened the score at 1-1. Junior 2B
Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) drew a six-pitch walk and came around to score when Sabido took Matt Messier's 1-0 pitch to right field. The Green & White took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth. Mazzio singled to left and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from senior 1B
Brad Currao (Howell, NJ/St. Rose). Mazzio advanced to third on Brey's grounder to first before scoring the go-ahead tally when Cala singled through the left side.
St. John's responded with a five-run bottom of the fifth to take a 6-2 lead. Following a Robert Boselli III walk to lead off the inning, Jamie Galazin came in to pinch run, stealing second and advancing to third on a wild pitch. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases for Berardi, but Galazin scored on a wild pitch from freshman reliever
Rico Viani (Monroe Township, NJ/Monroe Township). With the score tied at 2-2, Berardi connected on a three-run home run to right, giving the Red Storm a 5-2 lead. Anthony Brocato doubled to left and scored when Gui Gingras followed up with a double to left center as the Johnnies led by four at 6-2.
Wagner had a chance in their half of the seventh as Mazzio singled to right to start the frame. After consecutive fly outs, Cala reached on an error by the third baseman, moving Mazzio to third. Sabido drew a walk that loaded the bases, but the Seahawks couldn't bring anyone in as sophomore catcher
Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) flew out to center to end the threat.
