Women's Tennis Earns Third Conference Victory Of The Year; Defeats Mount St. Mary's On Monday Morning

New Market, MD - The Wagner women's tennis team defeated the Mount St. Mary's Mountaineers, 5-2, in Northeast Conference (NEC) action on Monday morning. With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 8-5 overall and 3-1 in conference matches while the Mountaineers fall to 4-12; 1-4 in league action. 

The Green & White took two of three doubles matches to secure the first point of the match. Senior Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana]) and sophomore Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) defeated the tandem of Kelly Smith/Hannah Davis, 6-4, to even their season record to 4-4 out of the No. 2 Flight position. 

Junior Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) and senior Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) defeated the pairing of Erin Benefiel/Emma Blake, 7-5. For Cumpa/Pautsch, they now stand at 5-1 as a team, all coming out of the No. 3 position. In singles action, the Seahawks were victorious in No. 2, No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles action. Sagwal and Cumpa each recorded their ninth singles victory of the season with wins at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively.

Baynes and junior Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) were also victorious as Baynes earned a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win at No. 3 over Smith while Hodges earned her 16th career singles triumph, a 7-5; 6-4 decision over Benefiel. 

Wagner will be back at the Wagner Tennis Courts for the final six matches of the regular season, beginning on March 29 at 2:00 p.m. as the Seahawks welcome Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) members, Fairfield.
