Staten Island, NY – Sophomore midfielder Marjorie Dehm (Baldwinsville, NY / C.W. Baker / Vermont) poured in a career-high four goals to lead four Seahawks with three or more goals, as the Wagner women's lacrosse team earned its first victory of the season, a 16-13 decision over Saint Mary's (CA) at sunny, yet frigid Hameline Field this afternoon.

With the win, the defending Northeast Conference (NEC) champions improve to 1-5 on the season while the Gaels, who were playing their third East Coast opponent in the last four days, are now 1-6.

Senior attacker Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Lenape) delivered her top offensive game thus far this year as the co-captain as she notched a team-high six points, recording a hat trick while assisting on three others. Also registering three-goal efforts for the Seahawks were junior midfielders Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ / Verona) and April Simmons (Branford, CT / Branford, CT). For Ednie, it was a four-point day as she added an assist while Simmons' three scores were a career high.

Sophomore attacker Anna Belle Reilly (Paradise Valley, AZ / Notre Dame Prep) and junior attacker Heidi Colford (Eden Praire, MN / Eden Praire) rounded out the Wagner scoring with four and three points, respectively. Reilly's four points came on two goals and two assists while Colford's three-point game featured one goal and two assists).

Junior Amanda Rey (Turnersville, NJ / Washington Township) delivered a virtuoso performance as the two-time All-NEC defender was seemingly all over the field in posting a game-high six caused turnovers while tying for team-high honors in both draw controls (6) and groundballs (4).

Junior goalie Lucy Darlington (Timonium, MD / Notre Dame Preparatory) stopped three shots in the opening half in posting the win. Fellow junior goalie Kelsey Fee (White Plains, NY / White Plains / Ithaca) came on at the outset of the second half and recorded four saves over the game's final 30 minutes.

Jillian Dunlap and Jocelyn Lubert paced the Gaels offensively with five points apiece as each tallied four goals and one assist on the afternoon. Meg Sheehan went the distance between the pipes and came up with 10 saves while allowing all 16 goals.

After Emily Mack of SMC buried a free position shot to give the Gaels a 1-0 lead 7:10 into the contest, Wagner closed the first half on a 4-1 run to take a 4-2 lead at the break.

The Seahawks then opened the second half on a 6-2 run, capped by Simmons' second straight goal, an unassisted tally at the 16:22 mark, that gave the Green & White a comfortable 12-4 lead. The lead grew to eight goals, at 14-6, following an Ednie goal with 14:34 left off a Colford feed, before the Gaels answered with a 5-0 run over the next 10:25 to make the game interesting at 14-11 with 4:11 remaining.

Wagner then regained control with goals by Dehm, off an assist by sophomore Kelsey Savje (Ellicott City, MD / Howard) at the 2:49 mark, followed by a Reilly score off an Ednie feed at 1:24 to give the Seahawks a 16-11 cushion. Saint Mary's (CA) would answer with two goals in the game's final 53 seconds but it was too little, too late as the Seahawks posted victory number one of the 2017 season.

The Green & White held an overwhelming 40-24 advantage in shots, and led the groundball battle by a 29-20 count. The Seahawks, who were 1-of-4 on free position shots while the Gaels were 4-of-11 in this category. Wagner held a slim 16-15 edge in draw controls.

Today's Noon contest kicked off Spring Break for the Seahawks which continues with a pair of games in Florida later in the week. On Thursday, March 16, Wagner will meet the Hatters of Stetson University in a 6:00 pm start in Deland, FL. The two games in the Sunshine State then conclude with a meeting with Jacksonville on Saturday, March 18 with opening draw between the Seahawks and the Dolphins set for 1:00 p.m.
