Jersey City, NJ- The Wagner women's tennis team commence its spring season with a 6-1 victory over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) member, Saint Peter's on Saturday.
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 5-1 on the year while the Peacocks fall to 0-7.
The Seahawks took two of three in doubles play as senior
Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School) and sophomore
Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) blanked the pairing of Claudia Hellman and Azuri Huges, 6-0 in No. 2 play.
Senior
Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) and junior
Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) were also victorious in No. 3 doubles by shutting out Stephanie Falcon and Aidah Muhammad, 6-0.
In singles action, the Seahawks took five of six matches, with Sagwal earning her team-best sixth victory of the year, at Flight No. 2 as she defeated Malieva Hedberg, 6-1; 6-1 for her 18th career victory at Wagner.
Baynes was victorious at No. 3 singles play with a 6-1; 6-1 win over Hellman for her third win of the season. Cumpa improved to 5-2 and 3-0 in No. 4 action as she defeated Falcon in straight sets.
Pautsch earned her 24th career victory after taking a 6-3; 6-3 win at No. 5 over SPU's Christian Resurreccion.
The Seahawks will look for its sixth win of the season they head to Easton, PA to tangle with Patriot League member, Bucknell University at the Northwood Racquet Club on February 12.
