Providence, RI –
Seven Seahawks scored throughout the contest but the Wagner women's water polo team fell 9-7 to No. 16 Hartwick College on the opening day of the Bruno Classic on Friday.

The freshman duo of Franciska Miló-Sidló (Budapest, Hungary / Pasaréti Gimnázium) and Jacqui Sjogren (Queensland, Australia / St. Andrews Anglican College) put the Green & White on the board first when Sjogren buried one into the back of the net off an assist from Miló-Sidló. However, the Hawks countered with a 4-0 run to take over the lead 4-1.

Reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Player of the Week Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec / John Rennie) ended the Hawks" run with her lone marker of the evening. Less than 30 seconds later, MAAC Rookie of the Week Millie Pullyblank (Victoria, Australia / Haileybury Girls School) netted the final goal of the quarter off an assist from junior attack Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA / Newbury) as the Seahawks ended the period trailing 4-3.

The teams played an even second quarter, each tallying one goal. Junior attack Lacey Anderson (Thousand Oaks, CA / Westlake) cashed in her lone goal on a penalty shot with 12 seconds remaining in the half as the Hawks held a narrow 5-4 lead heading into intermission.

Hartwick opened up the second half with an early goal before Anderson registered her second point, dishing out an assist to sophomore attack Erica Hardy (Montreal, Quebec / St. Thomas). However, the Hawks opened up a four-point lead on the Green & White at 9-5 with three unanswered goals. Miló-Sidló ended Hartwick's run, scoring her second collegiate goal with 13 seconds left in the stanza to make it 9-6.

The final eight minutes were a defensive battle as Begg recorded the only marker of the quarter with just over five minutes remaining. Despite a team-high 17 steals, seven of which came from senior goalkeeper Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta / Dr. E. P. Scarlett), the Seahawks were unable to overcome their nationally-ranked foe.

Wagner returns to the Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center on Saturday, February 4 for matchups against No. 19 Harvard University (11:30 a.m.) and Indiana University (4:10 p.m.).
