Men’s Lacrosse Falls At No. 10 Rutgers 12-5

Piscataway, NJ –
The Wagner men's lacrosse team dropped a 12-5 decision at 10th-ranked Rutgers this afternoon at High Point Solutions Stadium in a game that was televised nationally on the Big 10 Network.
 
With the victory, the Scarlet Knights remain unbeaten at 4-0 while the Seahawks fall to 1-3.
 
After a scoreless 10:47, RU notched the game's first goal off as Jules Heningburg hit the back of the net off a feed from Kieran Mullins. Rutgers would tack on five more goals in building a 6-0 lead at the intermission. The Scarlet Knights then tallied the first four goals of the second half to make it a 10-0 game midway through the third quarter.
 
The Seahawks got on the board when senior midfielder Christian McCormick (Royersford, PA / Spring-Ford) scored the first of his two goals, an unassisted tally with 4:09 remaining in the third quarter. Less than two minutes later, Wagner made it a 10-2 game when freshman attackman Nic Ancona (Warrenton, PA / Paul VI) blasted one home off from in close on an assist from junior midfielder JP Pawela (Montgomery Village, MD / St. John's College).
 
Rutgers scored two straight goals to open the fourth quarter to make it a 12-2 score before the Seahawks closed out the game with three unanswered goals to make it a 12-5 final. McCormick buried his second goal of the game, another unassisted effort with 9:38 left, which was followed by a score from junior attackman Billy Martin (Huntington, NY / Huntington) off a feed from fifth-year senior attackman Patrick McMenamin (Longport, NJ / St. Augistine Prep), to make it 12-4.
 
Wagner's leading scorer, junior attackman Andrew Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Lenape) then completed the 3-0 run and the day's scoring with his seventh goal of the season at the 3:39 mark off of Patrick McMenamin's second assist of the afternoon.
 
McCormick wound up with two goals on the afternoon, while Streilein, Ancona, and Martin finished with one apiece. Patrick McMenamin matched McCormick's two points with his two assists, while Pawela was credited with one helper. Junior defenseman Andrew Park (Kinnelon, NJ / Kinnelon) was active throughout, registering a game-high five caused turnovers and a team-high four groundballs, In goal, sophomore Matt Sefcik (Towaco. NJ / Morristown Beard) had 14 saves.
 
For Rutgers, Christian Mazzone's hat trick led the way while Casey Rose added two goals. RU goalie Max Edelmann recorded all seven of the Scarlet Knight's saves over the course of 54:57 before yielding to Jack Ayre who came to play the final 5:03 between the pipes.
 
The Seahawks are next in action on Saturday, March 4 at Hameline Field in a 1:00 p.m. faceoff vs. the Big Green of Dartmouth University.
