Women’s Lacrosse Drops 14-10 Decision At Hofstra

Hempstead, NY - Wagner trailed by just a 9-7 count early in the second half before Hofstra outscored the Seahawks 5-3 the rest of the way in recording a 14-10 victory in women's lacrosse action this afternoon at James H. Shuart Stadium.

With the loss, the Seahawks, who received hat tricks from sophomore attacker Anna Belle Reilly (Paradise Valley, AZ / Notre Dame) and junior midfielder Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ / Verona), fall to 0-2 on the young season while the Pride move to 2-0.

Following a similar theme to the season-opening 12-10 home loss to Iona when Wagner fell into an early 5-0 hole before rallying to make it close late, the Seahawks found themselves facing a 6-1 deficit nine minutes into today;s game. Reilly slammed home the game's first goal off the opening draw just 13 seconds into the game to give the Green & White a quick 1-0 lead. The lead was  short-lived, however, as Drew Shapiro notched her first of three goals just 13 seconds later in triggering a 6-0 Hofstra run.

Senior attacker and co-captain Olivia Streilein (Mt. Laurel, NJ / Lenape) snapped the scoring spree with an unassisted goal at the 17:35 mark of the first half in kicking off a 4-0 Seahawk run.  Ednie struck for two scores in the run, sandwiched around a goal by freshman attacker Stephanie Falcone (Orefield, PA / Perkiomen School) [unassisted at 13:50], the latter coming on a free position shot with 13:03 before intermission to make it a one-goal game at 6-5.

Hofstra closed the half with a 4-1 run in building a 9-6 lead at halftime before Ednie opened the the second half scoring with her third goal to make it a 9-7 game. This is as close as the Seahawks would get, however, as Hofstra answered with three straight scores in extending its lead to a game-high five goals, at 12-7, with 18 minutes left. Wagner would score three of the final five goals of the game but could not get closer than four goals the rest of the way.

In addition to the three-goal efforts by Reilly and Ednie, Wagner received two goals from Falcone while Streilein and junior midfielder April Simmons (Branford, CT / Brandford) finished with one goal apiece. Junior Kelsey Fee (White Plains, NY / White Plains/Ithaca College) went the distance in goal for the Seahawks and was credited with eight saves on the day. For the second straight game, Ednie had five draw controls to lead the Seahawks in this category for the second straight game, while freshman defender Giaci Vitolo (Denville, NJ / Morris Knolls) led Wagner in groundballs with three.

Hofstra's Alyssa Parrella was the game's leading scorer as she matched Shapiro's three goals while assisting on three others in finishing with six points on the day. Carlee Ancona and Mary Kate Gentry added two goals apiece for the Pride while Alexa Mattera chipped in with one. In goal, Maddie Fields went the entire way, recording six saves in picking up the win.

Statistically, Hofstra held narrow advantages in shots (27-25), groundballs (17-15), and draw controls (14-12). Both teams were 1-of-2 on free position shots. Hofstra turned the ball over 20 times while Wagner had 18 turnovers.

The Seahawks are next in action on Saturday, February 25 when they travel to Bucknell for a 4:30 p.m. contest vs. the Bison.
