Women's Tennis Hangs On For A 4-3 Win At Bucknell On Sunday Afternoon

Easton, PA - The Wagner women's tennis team held on for a thrilling 4-3 victory over Patriot League members, the Bucknell University Bison on Sunday afternoon.

With the win, the Seahawks improve to 6-1 on the season under first-year head Aida Castany while the Bison suffer their first defeat of the season and fall to 2-1 on the year.

"I am very proud of the way our team played this afternoon," commented Castany. "The match went back-and-forth, and I am pleased that our girls responded to the challenge presented in front of them." 

The Seahawks took the first point of the match, taking two of three in doubles play. Senior Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India / Delhi Public High School) and sophomore Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) improve to 2-0 on the season out of the No. 2 spot, as they defeated  Paige Leavy and Emilie Bush, 6-3. 

Senior Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) and junior Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University])  also earned their second win as a pair, picking up a 6-3 victory over Danielle Gannon and Jill Auteri. Sagwal gave Wagner a 2-0 lead in the match as she secured a 6-2; 6-0 win at No. 3 singles.  For Sagwal, the win marked career victory No. 19. 
Bucknell got on the board as Lauren Fishbein defeated junior Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA / San Dieguito Academy). Freshman Vedika Anand ( New Delhi, India / The Shri Ram School) outlasted Michele Urbinati, 2-6; 6-4, 7-6 (7-3) in No. 1 play to extend Wagner's lead to 3-1 in the match.

The Bison went on to take Flight No. 4 and No. 6 matches, setting up the deciding match in No. 5 between Cumpa and Mishi Papich. After dropping the first set, 2-6; Cumpa rallied to take the second, 6-3 before closing out the victory with a 6-2 win. 

The Seahawks will have a pair of matched coming up, both on the road, as they head to West Point, NY to tangle with the Army West Point Black Knights on February 17 and travel across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to tangle with St. Francis Brooklyn on February 18.
