Towson, MD – The Wagner women's basketball team scratched and clawed all night defensively and entered the fourth quarter trailing by just nine points before Towson pulled away for a 64-42 win tonight at Secu Arena.
With the loss, the Seahawks fall to 1-7 on the season while the Tigers improve to 2-4.
Fifth-year senior forward
Sierra Clark led the way again for the Green & White, finishing with 16 points and 10 rebounds, along with two steals. Through eight games, the 5-11 Clark now has four double-doubles, four 20-point games, and six double-digit efforts to her credit.
Freshman guard
Khaleah Dixon-Edwards made the most of her second straight start, hitting for nine points thanks to a trio of three-point jumpers, while senior guard
Tanasia Russell added six.
For Towson, Raine Bankston led the way with 16 points while Mary Cuevas had 15.
With Wagner trailing by an early 6-4 count, Towson went on a 14-2 run in taking a 20-6 lead after one quarter of play. After the Tigers outscored Wagner 11-8 in taking their biggest lead of the half at 31-14, Wagner responded with a 7-0 run to help trim the deficit to 33-21 at the intermission.
Clark led the Seahawks with eight first-half points to go with five rebounds. Dixon-Edwards, making her second consecutive start, added six in the opening on a pair of three-point jumpers.
Freshman guard
Addie Masonius saw the first action of her young career, having sat out the first seven game of the season nursing a foot injury.
Wagner outshot Towson 39 percent to 37 percent and held the advantage in points in the paint (22-16), second-chance points (10-5) and in bench scoring (8-5) while the Tigers held a 31-24 edge in the rebounding department.
The Green & White return to campus to prepare for final exams and then, on Sunday, December 10, the Seahawks will play just their second contest of the season at the Spiro Sports Center when they host the Longwood University Lancers in a 1:00 p.m. start. The Wagner-Longwood tilt will be the opening game of a doubleheader with the Wagner men to host Division II Mercy College at 4:00 p.m.
