Harrisonburg, VA – Fifth-year senior forward
Sierra Clark (Hughesville, MD / Archbishop Spalding), who was recruited to and played for
Heather Jacobs at Adelphi University where she went on to earn Division II All-American honors last season, recorded game highs with 22 points and nine rebounds, and the Wagner women's basketball team scratched and clawed its way all afternoon before dropping a 68-45 decision at James Madison this afternoon.
Showing major strides from Friday's season-opening loss at Virginia Tech, the Seahawks trailed by just 12 points at the half, 38-26, and when the athletic 5-11 Clark drained a top of the key three-pointer to open the second stanza, Wagner was within nine at 38-29.
While this is as close as the Green & White would get the rest of the way, the Seahawks continued to scrap and hustle throughout. Clark added a game-high four blocked shots while coming up with two steals during a spirited 37 minutes of playing time. Another major positive for Wagner was the play of freshman guard
Alayshia Dailey (Severn, MD / Old Mill), who came off the bench with 10 points on 3-of-6 shooting, to go with four rebounds and three steals, in 30 minutes of action.
Redshirt freshman guard
Morgan Lenehan (Haddonfield, NJ / Haddon Township / Neumann and Goretti) followed up her team-high 10-point outing in Friday's opener vs. Virginia Tech with seven points this afternoon, while senior forward
Samantha Sullivan (Manasquan, NJ / Manasquan) and junior guard
Nakylia Carter (Oklahoma City, OK / Putnam City North / Butler CC [KS]) chipped in with four and two points, respectively. The 6-1 Sullivan added three rebounds, two steals and an assist while providing a post presence throughout in logging a career-high 36 minutes.
James Madison, which competes in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) and came off an opening night loss to Rutgers on Friday, was led by Kelly Koshuta's 20 points. Kamiah Smalls, a high school teammate of Lenahan's at Philadelphia's Neumann & Goretti Prep, supplied 16 points for JMU while Kayla Cooper Williams and Hailee Barron added six points apiece.
JMU outshot Wagner 43 percent to 33 percent while holding a 42-29 edge in the rebounding department.
The Seahawks return to action on Thursday, November 16 when they travel to City of Brother Love to meet Temple. Tip-off between the Owls and the Seahawks from McGonigle Hall is set for 7:00 p.m.
