Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season in their final match of the fall season, dropping a 5-1 decision to the Siena College Saints on Saturday morning from the Wagner College Tennis Courts.
With the loss, the Seahawks conclude the fall slate with a 3-1 record while the Saints improve to 2-0 on the year.
The Saints jumped to an early 1-0 lead in the match after taking No. 1 and No. 3 Flight doubles matches with No. 2 match between senior
Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) and newcomer
Fidan Khalilzade (Baku, Azerbaijan/Respublican Olympic Sports) went unfinished at 3-4.
Siena jumped out to a 2-0 lead when Kylie Mullaney bested junior
Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) at No. 3 singles before they got on the board at No. 1 play as sophomore
Vedika Anand (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School) earned her tenth career victory while remaining undefeated at No. 1 after earning a 6-2; 6-3 victory over Ivana Boberic.
The Saints rallied back to take a 3-1 advantage after posting a 6-3; 6-4 at No. 2 when Natalie Weaver edged Khalilzade.
In a back-and-forth affair at No. 4 singles, senior
Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) took the first set 6-3 before Anessa Leyva rallied to take the second set, 6-2, in setting up a decisive third set. Both Hodges and Leyva were able to find their stride before Leyva was able to go ahead and put the match away, 10-7, in the third set, clinching the victory for the Saints.
The Seahawks will be back in action for the spring as they will travel to Bucknell University on February 10, 2018 as they will take on the Bison in Williamsport, PA for a 2:00 p.m. match.
