Women's Tennis Earns First Conference Victory; Defeats St. Francis Brooklyn 5-2 On Saturday

The Wagner College women's tennis team picked up its first Northeast Conference (NEC) victory of the season, defeating local conference rivals, the St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers, 5-2, on Saturday afternoon.
 
With the win, the Seahawks improve to 3-0 on the year and go to 1-0 in league play while the Terriers falter to 0-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference tilts.
 
The Green & White swept through doubles action to secure the first point of the match. The tandem of seniors Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) and Carolyn Gibson (San Marcos, CA/IMG Academy [FL]) blanked the Terriers pair of Akyi Lenjor and Isabel Castellanos, 6-0 in No. 2 doubles.
 
Senior Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA / San Dieguito Academy) and sophomore Vedika Anand (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School) edged Jean-na Koo and Runsi Patro in No. 1 play, 6-4.
 
Junior Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) and sophomore Melanie Post (Wilmington, NC/John T. Hoggard) completed the sweep with a 6-1 victory over Laura Dimante and Andrea Rojo at No. 3.
 
Baynes put Wagner up 2-0 after besting Lenjor at No. 3 singles, 6-1; 6-0. Hodges picked up her 20th career singles victory at No. 2 when she defeated Dimante, 6-3; 6-4.
 
Cumpa picked up her 15th career singles victory while improving to 5-0 all-time out of the No. 4 spot after she bested Castellanos, 6-0; 6-0 to seal the victory for the Seahawks.  Anand posted the final victory for the Green & White after outlasting Koo, 3-6; 6-3; 6-2.
 
For the Terriers, they were victorious at No. 6 and No. 5 with Patro edging Post, 9-8 (4) at No.5 in a back-and-forth affair.
 
The Seahawks will compete at the upcoming 2017 ITA Regional, which will be contested over six-days from October 18 through 23 in Philadelphia, PA at the campus of University of Pennsylvania.
