Women's Tennis Defeats Rider, 6-1, In Home Opener On Wednesday

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner College women's tennis team was victorious in their home opener on Wednesday afternoon, defeating Rider, 6-1, at the Wagner Tennis Courts.
 
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 2-0 on the season under first-year head coach Anett Ferenczi-Bako. Rider falls to 1-5 in dual matches this season.
 
Additionally, Wagner have now won the last eight meetings against the Broncs, with their last defeat coming back on April 5, 2012 when they dropped a 6-1 decision in Lawrenceville, NJ.
 
The Green & White secured the first point of the match after sweeping through doubles play. Senior Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) and sophomore Vedika Anand (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School) were victorious at No. 2 doubles play with a 6-1 win over Amanda Binder/Sydney Jeffrey.
 
Sophomore Melanie Post (Wilmington, NC/John T. Hoggard) and senior Carolyn Gibson (San Marcos, CA/IMG Academy (FL) earned a gritty, 7-5 victory at No. 3 doubles over Danielle Scrudato/Montana Morris in clinching the doubles point for the home team.
 
Senior Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA / San Dieguito Academy) and freshman Fidan Khalilzade (Baku, Azerbaijan / Respublican Olympic Sports Lyceum) got past Cyd Melendez/Vanessa Canda at No. 1 doubles, 7-6 (7).
 
Wagner wound up taking a 2-0 lead in the match when Anand defeated Canda at No. 2 singles, 6-4; 6-3. The Broncs recorded their first win of the day at No. 3 singles when Binder edged out Hodges at No. 3, 7-6 (9), 6-2 in cutting the match deficit to 2-1.
 
Khalilzade and junior Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) posted back-to-back three set wins with Khalilzade besting Melendez at No. 1; 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 while Baynes edged Jeffrey; 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 to secure the victory for the Seahawks.
 
Post and Cumpa each were victorious at No. 6 and No. 5 singles, respectively, with Post defeating Morris, 6-0, 6-1 while Cumpa ended the match with a 8-5 victory over Scrudato.
 
Wagner will conclude this three-match homestand on Saturday, October 14, as they host St. Francis Brooklyn for both schools Northeast Conference (NEC) opener. The match is set for 1:00 p.m.
