Women's Tennis Concludes Two-Day Hofstra Invitational; Hodges/Baynes Claim "B" Consolation Doubles Title

Hempstead, NY – The Wagner College women's tennis team wrapped up play at the Hofstra University Invitational this past weekend.
 
The Seahawks brought back one title as in the "B" consolation doubles finale, it was an all-Wagner showdown as senior Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA / San Dieguito Academy) and junior Rina Baynes (Johns Creek, GA/Chattahoochee) edged teammates sophomore Melanie Post (Wilmington, NC/John T. Hoggard) and senior Carolyn Gibson (San Marcos, CA/IMG Academy [FL]), 6-1.
 
"A" Bracket
Sophomore Vedika Anand (New Delhi, India / The Shri Ram School) and senior Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) were the lone representatives, playing in the quarterfinals of the "A" bracket. Anand/Cumpa were bested in the quarterfinals by the Quinnipiac pairing of Jennifer Lu/Layla Rodriguez, 6-1.
 
"A" Consolation
Anand/Cumpa were pitted against the pairing of LIU Brooklyn's Sasha Bollweg and Jessica Brzozowska in the semifinals of the consolation bracket. The Seahawk duo dropped a 6-2 decision to the Blackbirds, who went on to win the title over the pairing from Marist (Julia Gabay/Claire Schmitz).
 
"B" Bracket
Anand and Cumpa each competed in the "B" singles bracket with both Seahawk members falling in the round of 16. Anand dropped a 6-3; 6-1 decision to Gabay while Cumpa was blanked by Hofstra's Sarah Herndon (6-0; 6-0).
 
Hodges/Baynes along with Post/Gibson competed in the doubles portion of the bracket. Post/Gibson were bested, 6-2, by Herndon and teammate Disha Yellayi.
 
"C" Bracket
Hodges, Gibson and Baynes were all victorious in the round of 16 in singles action with Hodges defeating Saint Peter's, Stephanie Falcon, 7-5; 6-0. Gibson earned a 6-3; 6-2 victory over SPU's Azuri Hughes and Baynes edged out Marist Sophia Chavarria in three sets.
 
"C" Consolation
In the consolation bracket, Post picked up a pair of 8-0 triumphs over two Saint Peter's opponents, 8-0, over Aidah Muhammad in the quarters and Falcon in the semifinals. In the championship round, Post was defeated by Chavarria, 8-2.
 
The Seahawks will host the first of four home matches on Sunday, October 8, as they welcome Saint Peter's to Staten Island for a 1:00 p.m. start.
