Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's soccer team lost its first of two home games this weekend 2-0 to the visiting University of Rhode Island Rams on Friday night at Hameline Field.
The Seahawks got off to a fast start and were able to generate multiple scoring chances. Freshman
Maria Nunez (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) and sophomore defender
Peyton Beck (St. Louis, MO / Webster Groves) had the team's first opportunities, but could not capitalize. Ten minutes into the contest, Nunez headed the ball towards the net from close range after a dangerous cross from fellow first-year player
Autumn Clark (Fort Lauderdale, FL / Pine Crest Prep), but the promising header was saved and kept the game scoreless.
Three minutes into the second period, Clark missed high from 20 yards away, before the Rams capitalized on a shot by Emily Wakeford to break the tie after a counter attack. Junior goalkeeper
Jessica Wilm (Shelton, CT / Shelton) came up big for the Green and White ten minutes later, as she prevented two dangerous Rhode Island attempts from finding the back of the net. However, the Rams doubled their lead in the 69
th minute, as Taylor Ross converted a corner kick.
Nunez and
Taylor Sackaris (St. James, NY / Smithtown East) led the way for Wagner with three shots, while Clark and senior defender
Jessica Mouradian (Baldwin, NY / Baldwin) had two attempts each.
The Seahawks return to Hameline Field on Sunday, September 25, as they take on Columbia at 2:00 p.m. for their last non-conference game of the season.
