Women's Tennis Defeats Monmouth, 6-1, On Thursday Afternoon

West Long Branch, NJ - The Wagner women's tennis team picked up its second win of the fall season, defeating Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) foe, Monmouth University, 6-1, on Thursday afternoon.

The Seahawks improve to (2-1) on the year while their counterparts dropped its dual match opener and fall to 0-1.

"I am proud of the girls and their play today," said head coach Aida Castany. "I was pleased to see that in most of the close matches and sets, we found a way to win."

Wagner took a 1-0 lead by winning the doubles point. At No. 1, freshman Vedika Anand (New Delhi, India/The Shri Ram School) and senior Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Louisiana]) defeated Adriana Armendariz/Alexandra Graff, 6-3. Juniors Brenda Cumpa (Lima, Peru/Carmelitas [West Virginia State University]) and Carolyn Gibson (San Marcos, CA/IMG Academy [FL]) shutout Chioma Gabriel/Maria Ivanova, 6-0.

In a thrilling, back-and-forth No. 2 doubles match, junior Samantha Hodges (Encinitas, CA/San Dieguito Academy) and senior Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) edged Kendal Kauffman/Victoria Nugent, 7-6 (8-6) to sweep doubles play.

The Seahawks were able to take five of the six singles matches en route to its second victory of the season. Sagwal and Anand need three sets in No. 1 and No. 2 play, respectively, in coming out victorious. Sagwal dropped the first set to Armendariz, 2-6 before rattling off a 6-3 win in the second set and a 10-3 victory in taking the match.
Anand took set number one, 6-3. Graff was able to outlast Anand 6-7 before the freshman was able to seize the momentum and pick up a 10-7 in the third set.

Hodges was triumphant at No. 3, beating Kauffman, 7-5; 6-2 while Cumpa and freshman Melanie Post (Wilmington, NC/John T. Hoggard) were victorious at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively.

The Green & White will head up to West Point, NY for the Army West Point Invitational, contested over the next three days (September 23-25).
