Staten Island, NY –
Despite taking an early 1-0 lead on a penalty kick by senior captain Megan Fritz (Cape Coral, FL / Mariner), the Wagner women's soccer team lost a physical game 2-1 to Rider on Sunday afternoon at Hameline Field.

"Rider is a very good team and we are happy with the way the team showed up. We have to get a little more efficient on the offensive end, but this is definitely a step forward for us," said head coach Mike Minielli after the game.

The 2014 NEC coach of the year started seven underclassmen and saw his team take an early lead. After Fritz was taken down illegally in the box, she converted her second penalty shot of the season. The visitors answered and tested the Seahawk defense, but were unable to get past Jessica Wilm (Shelton, CT / Shelton) in goal, who had six saves in the contest.

The visiting Broncos knotted the score at one after the break, as Kourtney Cunningham took a Sofia Soares pass and shot it past Wilm. Both teams developed scoring chances after the equalizer and pushed to take the lead. Senior Jessica Mouradian (Baldwin, NY / Baldwin) had the best attempt for Wagner, but her hard shot from 18 yards away was turned away by Rider's Bethany-May Howard. In the 65th minute, Rider's Ellie Smith made the most out of a breakaway opportunity and gave the Broncos the lead.

Freshmen Autumn Clark (Fort Lauderdale, FL / Pine Crest Prep) and Maria Nunez (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) along with Mouradian led the Seahawks in shots with three. Fritz's goal was her third on the season, which leads the team. Kim Fetto (Manalapan, NJ / Manalapan) and Amber Coca (Riverview, FL / Bloomingdale) also had shots on goal in the game.

The Seahawks return to Hameline Field on Friday, September 2, for a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Delaware State University.
