Newark, NJ – In its first game of the 2016 season, the Wagner women's soccer team suffered a 3-0 loss to NJIT on the road. The Seahawks were led by goalkeeper
Jessica Wilm (Shelton, CT / Shelton), who saved six shots on the day, as the Green and White dropped to 0-1-0 on the year.
The start to the game saw head coach Mike Minielli's team on defense, as the Highlanders pushed the Seahawks into their own territory. Wilm, who got the start between the pipes, stopped two shots in the opening period, while freshman
Maria Nunez (East Greenwich, RI / East Greenwich) registered her first career shot on goal.
NJIT took the lead 25 minutes into the game on a goal by Fiorella Doglio and doubled its lead 15 minutes after the halftime whistle, when Neema Liverpool tapped in a pass by Arianna Gerber. Nicole Baldassini added a third goal for the Highlanders 75 minutes into the game.
The Seahawks tried to rally in the second half, but
Jessica Mouradian's (Baldwin, NY / Baldwin) shot was turned away. Wilm added another four saves for the Seahawks in the second half.
With the loss, Wagner falls to 6-2-0 all-time against the Highlanders. The Seahawks return to action on Sunday, as they take on Toledo at 2:00 pm at Hameline Field.
