Women's Tennis Shutout Against Sacred Heart On Friday Afternoon

Staten Island, NY – The Wagner women's tennis team suffered its first Northeast Conference (NEC) defeat on Friday afternoon, falling to the Sacred Heart University Pioneers, 7-0.
The Seahawks falter to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play while the Pioneers improve to 8-7 and 2-0 in league action.

Wagner dropped all three doubles matches which gave Sacred Heart a 1-0 advantage in the overall match.

In singles competition, the Green & White put forth a valiant all afternoon but couldn't overcome a tough Sacred Heart team, who took all six singles matches. Junior Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School) dropped only her third singles match of the season, falling at No. 1 singles, 6-2; 6-4 to Katie DeRienzo.

In No. 2 singles play, senior Marina Rull Valvieso (Barcelona, Spain/I IES Antony Cumella [Tarleton State]) was ousted by Olivia Podsiebierski, 7-5; 6-0. 

The Seahawks will be action on Sunday, April 10, as they welcome another NEC rival, the LIU Brooklyn Blackbirds to Staten Island. The match is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. as it proceeds the men's contest against Sacred Heart, which is slated for 2:00 p.m.
