Staten Island, NY - Senior RHP
Mike Adams (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Holy Spirit) went the distance in the nightcap of Friday's Northeast Conference (NEC) doubleheader, as the Wagner baseball team won its third straight game, blanking the Fairleigh Dickinson University Knights, 7-0.
With the victory, the Seahawks improve to 13-26 and 8-14 in league play while the Knights fall to 19-23 and 9-12 in conference tilts.Â
For Adams, the senior right-hander tossed seven scoreless innings, allowed four hits and struck out a career-high eight batters while issuing just two walks.
Junior SS
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) went 2-for-4 in the second game of the twinbill, with two runs scored. Â Sophomore DH
Anthony Godino (Thornwood, NY/Pleasantville) and freshman catcher,
Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) each drove in two RBIs in the shutout win.Â
FDU's right-handed starter, Chris Kachmar, tossed five innings, giving up five hits, three earned runs while walking five and striking out three. Â Patrick McClure went 2-for-3 to lead the Knights at the plate.Â
This afternoon's second game was a complete stalemate on the mound, as both starters matched identical scoreless innings over the first four innings. In fact, Kachmar and Adams hadn't allowed a hit until in the bottom of the third when senior RF
Ben Ruta (West Windsor, NJ/West-Windsor Plainsboro South) singled to right field.
Adams continued his mastery in the fourth, striking out the side. With the count at 3-1 in the top of the fifth, McClure singled up the middle, breaking up the no-hit bid for Adams. Â After a strikeout of Joel Roman, Evan McDonald singled through the left side, giving the visitors runners on first and second with one out. The Garden State hurler then collected himself and was able to get the inning-ending, 5-4-3 double play. Â
Wagner scored the game's first runs in its half of the fifth. A leadoff single through the left side by sophomore 2B
Kyle Brey (Middletown, NJ/Middletown South) started the rally. Mascelli followed suit with a hit through the right side, giving the Seahawks runners on first and second.Â
After a sacrifice bunt from senior CF
Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) advanced both runners, Ruta was intentionally walked, loading the bases for Godino, who drew a walk for the game's first run.Â
With the count against him at 1-2, Capra found space sent a screamer through the left side, plating both Ruta and Mascelli, giving the Green & White a 3-0 advantage.
Adams recorded his career-high eighth punchout of the contest after Shane Siebler was called out looking at strike three over the outside corner. Â A fly-out to left and a grounder to short gave Adams his fourth 1-2-3 inning of the game.
The Seahawks efficiently put the game away in the bottom of the sixth, batting around in the frame while scoring four runs in taking a 7-0 lead.Â
Senior 1B
John Lynn (Wallingford, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) singled to left center in kicking off the stanza. Â Brey reached on a fielder's choice bunt to the pitcher. Back-to-back hits from Mascelli and Nicosia loaded the bases for Ruta, who sent a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Brey from third.Â
Facing Nick Cuono, Godino roped a single back up the middle which scored Mascelli for the fifth run of the game. A pair of walks with the bases loaded to Brey and sophomore 3B
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) increased the lead to 7-0.Â
In the top of the seventh, Adams surrendered his second free pass of the game, to John Giakas, before strikeout pinch-hitter, Bradley Rodier. Â A pair of one-out hits from McClure and Roman gave the Knights their first chance to come back in the game.Â
After a brief mound visit from his catcher, Adams got McDonald to foul out to Lynn at first and ended the game as Jason Fatzinger grounded out to Mascelli, who fired across the diamond to Lynn giving Wagner its third straight win.
Wagner and Fairleigh Dickinson will conclude their regular season matchup with another doubleheader tomorrow, April 30. Game one, which will be a seven-inning affair, will have a first pitch of 1:00 p.m. followed by a nine-inning contest to commence approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
