Results (HTML)

West Windsor, NJ - The Wagner women's tennis team's season came to a close on Friday morning, falling to the Sacred Heart University Pioneers, 4-0, in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Quarterfinals at the Mercer County Tennis Center.

With the loss, the Seahawks finish the 2015-16 campaign at 8-7, their second straight season of recording eight wins while the Pioneers improve to 10-9 and will take on the No. 2 seed, Fairleigh Dickinson, at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday.

The Pioneers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the match after taking Flight Doubles 1 & 2, by the scores of 6-2 and 6-3, respectively.

Senior Marina Rull Valvieso (Barcelona, Spain/IES Cumella Antony [Tarleton State]) dropped her final singles match of her career in straight sets.

Sacred Heart closed out the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles to advance in the NEC Tournament.

The 2016-17 women's tennis team will look to build upon its recent success as the Seahawks will have four upperclassmen in Avika Sagwal (New Delhi, India/Delhi Public High School [Southeastern Lousiana]), Madison Pautsch (Costa Mesa, CA/Edison) and Carolyn Gibson (Windermere, FL/IMG Academy), along with Hodges and Baynes.

Sagwal finished the year with a team-leading 12-4 record while Pautsch and Baynes each added eight singles wins.

In doubles play, Baynes and Hodges posted nine wins as a pairing, second to the tandem of Rull Valvieso and Sagwal (11).  As a team in doubles play, Wagner went 28-24 while posting an 8-6 mark out of the No. 3 position, thanks to a 4-1 record by Gibson and Pautsch.
