Staten Island, NY - Despite out-hitting Central Connecticut, 11-10, the Wagner baseball team was unable to overcome a pair of four-run innings in falling to the Blue Devils, 8-2, in the nightcap of today's doubleheader.
With the loss, the Seahawks now stand at 9-13 on the season and 5-3 in Northeast Conference (NEC) play while the Blue Devils improve to 10-14 and 3-5 in league play.
Sophomore RF
Kyle Cala (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) went 3-for-4 with a run scored while freshman 1B
Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) went 2-for-4. Sophomore SS
Sean Mazzio (West Chester, PA/Salesianum School [DE]) and freshman
Cole Heavilin (Vista, CA/Rancho Buena Vista) each had an RBI for the Seahawks.
Central's Dean Lockery went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI while Ryan Costello and Corey Lerche each had three RBIs.
Senior LHP
Matt Morris (Matawan, NJ/St. John Vianney) suffered his second loss of the season, tossing 4.1 innings, allowing six hits, four earned runs and striking out three. Seniors
Nick Pavia (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph By The Sea) and
Nick DiLeo (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier [St. John's]) combined to toss 3.1 scoreless innings of relief.
Central Connecticut broke a scoreless tie with four runs in the top of the third. Tyler Coleman drew a walk and came around to score on Costello's RBI ground out. The next batter, Lerche, connected on a three-run home run over the left field wall, giving CCSU a 4-0 lead.
Wagner got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Mazzio.
The Blue Devils added four in the top of the sixth. Nick Garland reached on a throwing error by Mazzio and advanced to second on an overthrow. After a strikeout to David Balunek, Matt Martinez singled to right-center, scoring Garland. Lockery then lofted a sacrifice fly to center to score Martinez, giving the Blue Devils a 6-1 lead. Costello added a two-run single to extend the visitors lead to 8-1.
The Seahawks notched a run in the bottom of the frame as freshman
Cole Heavilin (Vista, CA / Rancho Buena Vista) connected on an opposite-field single to right which scored Harrold from second. This would be the closest that Wagner would get as Central Connecticut starter, Brett Susi, threw 127 pitches for the complete game win, in which he allowed 11 hits, two earned runs, a walk and struck out seven batters.
Wagner will next be in action on April 6 when the Seahawks make the short trip to South Orange, NJ to meet Big East member Seton Hall with first pitch set for 4:00 p.m.
