Women’s Lacrosse Completes Weekend Sweep With 15-9 Win At LIU Brooklyn

Brooklyn, NY – Senior midfielders Shea Gegan (Belmar, NJ / Manasquan) and Gretchen Fay (Spring Lake Heights, NJ / Manasquan) struck for four and three goals, respectively, to lead the Wagner women's lacrosse team to a 15-9 victory at LIU Brooklyn today, to complete a weekend sweep for the Seahawks who earned an 8-6 road win at Sacred Heart on Friday.

The Seahawks' two-game winning streak improves their Northeast Conference (NEC) record to 3-1 while Wagner's overall mark moves to 5-8. With the loss, the Blackbirds fall to 0-4 in the NEC and 4-10 overall.

On the afternoon, the "Jersey Shore Combo" of Fay and Gegan, teammates for four years at Manasquan High School before teaming for the last four years at Wagner, combined for seven goals, four draw controls, two ground balls and one caused turnover.

The Green & White broken open a 2-2 tie by closing the first half on a 7-1 run in building an 8-3 lead at the intermission. Fay and Gegan tallied two goals apiece during the 7-1 spree while Wagner also received first-half goals from junior defender Amanda Rey (Turnersvile, NJ / Washington Township), senior attackers Taylor Pastore (Baldwinsville, NY / C.W. Baker) and Stephanie Peterson (Vernon,, NJ/Vernon Township) along with freshman attacker Anna Belle Reilly (Paraside Valley, AZ / Notre Dame Prep).

Peterson opened the second half with her second goal of the day on a free position shot, which began a 5-2 run as the Seahawks increased their lead to 13-5 and never looked back. Senior attacker Tori McGrath (Delmar, NY / Bethlehem Central) contributed added two goals and an assist for Wagner, which also received a goal from sophomore middie Lauren Ednie (Verona, NJ / Verona).

In goal, senior Katie Ferraro (Owings Mill, MD / McDonough) recorded eight saves while playing the game's first 37:19 in recording the win. Sophomore Lucy Darlington (Timonium, MD / Notre Dame Preparatory) came on to play the final 22:29 in goal and was credited with four saves.

For LIU Brooklyn, the Blackbirds were led by a four-goal performance from Jenn Peters while Jayde Sains added two scores on the day. In goal, Virginia Gibbons and Alexis Maldonado combined for three saves.

Wagner held a 28-25 edge in shots and a 16-10 advantage in groundballs while the Blackbirds led in groundballs, 18-13. Wagner was successful on its lone free position attempt in the game while LIU Brooklyn was 2-of-4 in FPO's.

The Seahawks will look to continue their winning ways when they host Mount St. Mary's in a Senior Day matchup vs. the Mountaineers on Saturday, April 23. Opening draw at Hameline Field is set for 1:00 p.m.
