Women’s Water Polo Picks Up Two Wins On Senior Day; Lundgren Sets MAAC Single Season Goal Record

Staten Island, NY – The #20 Wagner (25-9, 10-0 MAAC) women's water polo team defeated Villanova (15-15, 5-5 MAAC) and VMI (8-17, 3-7 MAAC) on Senior Day, in the process senior Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) set the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and Wagner single season goal record.

Lundgren on the day surpassed Iona's Maggie Wood's MAAC single season mark of 119 goals while catapulting past her own Wagner record of 116 as she has now amassed 129 goals for the 2016 season.

The game opened up with a quick strike from the Seahawks as senior attacker Megan Rodriguez (Danville, CA/ San Ramon Valley) found a cutting Lundgren for the first score of the contest just 18 seconds into competition. The duo connected again at the 6:12 mark of the first quarter, with Lundgren burying a spinning back hander that cruised by the goalie. Sophomore Kimberly Watson (Pointe-Claire, Quebec/ John Rennie) registered a score less than thirty seconds later to give the Seahawks a 3-0 lead before the Wildcats Dominique Clark found the back of the net.

Lundgren then swiped the ball away from a Villanova player to start a fast break which she would capitalize on for the Green & White, extending the lead to 4-1 in the first period. Naomi Ng would tally for the Wildcats but freshman Erica Hardy (Montreal, Quebec/ St. Thomas) would record a score with mere seconds remaining in the first quarter to maintain a three goal advantage for Wagner.

Each side struggled to find an offensive flow in the second quarter as the defense took over. Lundgren netted the only score for the Seahawks in the period off an assist from Watson on a man-up chance. Clark tallied for Villanova with under a minute left in the half to bring the score to 6-3 at the break.

Wagner's offense erupted in the second half totaling 11 scores while their defense stymied the Wildcats to only five goals.

Lundgren continued her performance from the first half, totaling five second half tallies and nine total goals in the game. It was during this stretch that Lundgren surpassed Iona's Maggie Wood for the most single season goals in conference history.

Sophomore Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA/ Newbury) and senior Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD/ Broadneck) had multiple goal second halves with Begg finding the back of the net for a hat trick. Sophomore Lacey Anderson (Thousand Oaks, CA/ Westlake) also recorded a score in the half along with three assists.

Junior goalie Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta/ Dr. E.P. Scarlett) had five blocks in the contest as Villanova's Julie Conrath stopped 13 Seahawk scoring opportunities.
 Wagner would defeat Villanova by a final count of 17-8.

Wagner 20 VMI 8 (Score Sheet)

The second contest of the day served as the Seahawks ceremonial senior day game, recognizing the class of 2016 which would by the end of the day record its 101st win together only adding to their mark in program history.

The game started with back-to-back-to-back goals from the seniors with all three striking the back of the cage within the first one and half minutes of the contest. Doerfler was the first to record a goal on senior day as she created space after great position in front of the net and buried home a strike. Lundgren followed suite with a strike of her own just 23 seconds later. Rodriguez was the third sequential senior to rip the net as she hit home on a left-handed shot.

The Seahawks offense was clicking throughout the game, totaling 20 goals and 12 in the first half alone. Doerfler tallied a second goal in the opening period with Lundgren registering two more for a hat trick. Hardy fired home a struck with under 10 seconds left in the opening stanza to extend Wagner's lead to 7-0.

Rodriguez scored twice to complete her hat trick during the second quarter. Lundgren, Anderson, and Watson each recorded one score in the period with Haley Scott getting the Keydets on the board. Wagner would lead VMI by a score of 12-1 at halftime.

Doerfler didn't have to wait long to complete her hat trick as she joined Rodriguez and Lundgren less than two minutes into the second half with a slick goal after muscling her way for position. Lundgren totaled two more scores in the third as freshman Nicole Wallace (Harare, Zimbabwe/ Chisipite Senior School) and Begg also tallied to bring the Green & White lead to 17-6 entering the final quarter.
Riddle was consistent in net as she recorded five blocks and anchored the defense.

Doerfler would add two goals in the fourth period as she was set-up by Begg and Rodriguez. Lundgren would cap the day off with a goal off a feed from Rodriguez. Rodriguez's final assist of the day would tie her own individual school record for single season assists as she as now accumulated 105 on the year. The final score read 20-8 in favor of the Seahawks.

The trio of seniors each had memorable last performances in the Spiro Sports Center.

Jess Lundgren – 7 goals, 1 assist, 4 steals
Megan Rodriguez – 3 goals, 7 assists, 3 steals

The Seahawks are back in action Sunday, April 17 in the final day of the regular season for the MAAC. Wagner will compete against Marist at 9:00 a.m. and St. Francis Brooklyn at 4:00 p.m. Each game will be live stated.
