Charlottesville, VA - The Wagner baseball team dropped the opening game of a mid-week series at No. 10 Virginia, 6-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Davenport Field.
Wagner falls to 3-3 on the year while Virginia improves to 8-4 on the season.
A pair of Wagner freshmen, first baseman
Anthony Harrold (Woodbury, NJ/Gloucester Catholic) and catcher
Phil Capra (North Salem, NY/North Salem) each went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Capra picked up his first collegiate RBI.
Junior SS
Nick Mascelli (Clifton, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) and senior CF
Trey Nicosia (State College, PA/State College Area) each had a hit on the afternoon with Mascelli extending his hit streak to six straight contest sin the process.
Senior RHP
Mike Adams (Egg Harbor Township, NJ/Holy Spirit) hurled the first 4.2 while innings while allowing six earned runs, eight hits, and two walks, to go with one strikeout.
The 10th-ranked ranked Cavaliers struck first for three runs in the second inning. Daniel Pinero led off with a single and moved to second on a Doak Dozier sacrifice. Ryan Karstetter followed with a run-scoring single to center. With two outs and runners in scoring position, Ernie Clement lined a single to left-center to give UVA a 3-0 lead.
Capra led off Wagner's third inning with a single to right. With two outs, Mascelli singled to right field, scoring Capra for the Seahawks first run of the game.
Virginia scored in the fourth inning and a pair of runs in the fifth to take a 6-1. With two outs in the ninth, Harrold singled before Capra tripled to center field scoring Harrold.
The Seahawks and Cavaliers conclude their mid-week series Wednesday, March 9 as Wagner will send freshman LHP
