#17 Women’s Water Polo Finishes Play At Harvard Invite With 9-8 Comeback Victory Over #11 Hartwick

– The #17 Wagner (13-8) women's water polo squad completed a furious fourth quarter comeback to defeat #11 Hartwick (9-5) by a final score of 9-8.

The Seahawks were outscored in the opening stanza by a count of 3-1. Zsofia Polak led the offensive attack for Hartwick in the opening quarter, totaling two first period scores. Sophomore Elise Begg (Newbury Park, CA/ Newbury) tallied the lone goal for the Green & White in the period.

Wagner and Hartwick played an even second quarter, each notching two goals in the period of play. Sophomore Lacey Anderson (Thousand Oaks, CA/ Westlake) and senior Jess Lundgren (Queensland, Australia/ Mountain Creek) each found the back of the net for the Seahawks in the second. The Green & White entered halftime trailing 5-3.

Hartwick seemed to gain control of the game in the third quarter as they extended their lead to three goals. Lundgren tallied her second goal of the game during the third quarter and senior center Lily Doerfler (Annapolis, MD/ Broadneck) tossed in a score with only 50 seconds remaining in the period. Entering the fourth period of play, Hartwick held an 8-5 advantage.

The Seahawks roared back in dramatic fashion during the fourth quarter. The Green & White defense held strong not allowing a score from Hartwick. Junior goalie Emily Riddle (Edmonton, Alberta. Dr. E.P. Scarlett) registered six saves throughout the contest to lead the defensive efforts. Wagner's offense exploded for four goals in the final installment to pull out a thrilling 9-8 come from behind victory. Doerfler continued momentum from the third quarter tossing in two early scores in the fourth to cut Wagner's deficit to one goal.

With the Seahawks trailing 8-7 with 3:13 left in the final period of play, Begg rattled the cage for the Green & White to even the score at 8-8. With the potential of overtime staring both teams in the face, Doerfler fired home a struck with 1:35 left which would prove to be the game winning goal for Wagner.

The Seahawks are back in action March 12 as they head to Tempe, AZ for the Arizona State Invite. The Green & White open tournament play with the University of Redlands at 2:30 p.m.
