Storrs, CT – The Wagner men's tennis team dropped a closely-contested, 4-3, decision at the University of Connecticut (UConn) on Thursday afternoon.
The Seahawks fall to 6-8 on the season while the Huskies snap a 17-match losing skid and now stand at 3-18 on the season.
Wagner swept the final doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead into singles playas the pairing of sophomore
Charlton Boyd (Shreveport, LA/Loyola College Prep) and freshman
Ilya Kneppelhout (Woubrugge, Netherlands/Scala College Secondary School) improved to 11-2 on the season as a pair as they defeated the combo of Zac McEntee and Arnaud Valentin, 6-3.
In No. 1 doubles play, the pairing of
Dale Sandy (Durban, South Africa/Kersney College Secondary School) and
Eric Poland (Fort Meyers, FL/Bishop Verot) earned a hard-fought, 7-6, triumph over Jacob Spreyer and Christoper Toner.
In singles action, the Seahawks found themselves trailing 2-1 in the overall match after the Huskies took Flight No. 6 and No. 5 by a 6-0; 6-1 and 6-2; 6-4 tallies. In Flight No. 3 action, Poland mounted a comeback after dropping the first set 6-4 but succumbed to Justin Warren, 7-5, as the Huskies took a 3-1 lead in the overall match.
Boyd earned his tenth victory of the season and career victory No. 28 after he defeated McEntee, 6-4; 7-5. For Boyd, he improved to 5-1 on the season out of the No. 4 position this season while improving to 8-3 in No. 4 action.
The Huskies earned the victory out of the No. 1 position as Spreyer was able to outlast Sandy, 4-6; 6-3; 6-4 to give UConn the match.
After dropping the first set 5-7 in No. 2 singles, Kneppelhout was able to regain his composure and defeat Christopher Toner, 6-4; 6-1 for his team-leading 12th victory of the season and first out of the No. 2 Flight position.
The Seahawks will next be in action on March 30, as they host the University of Maryland Eastern Shore for a 1:30 p.m. start time.
